My shy daughter’s experience proved to be very inspiring. She never spoke in class, but in the two online courses she took, she dived into discussions and posted her opinions. The online course began and things ran better than I had expected. The sutdents all followed the directions well, and the discussion board was lively.I’ve never met any of my students but I got to know them by their work and I saw their learning attitudes develop before my eyes.I found that online education worked best with students who were very comfortable with the computer and willing to become part of a community built around the subject matter. And it required teachers to be willing to help build that sense of community and make the students feel the teacher was always there.1.1)merely2)charitable3)sentimental4)salvage5)clippings

Her daughter smoked and she felt a deep hurt as her mother. She remembered how as a child she sat by, through the yards, and watched her father, who smoked like a chimney, wheeze through most of his life feeling half his strength, and she remembered how carefully she ate when she was pregnant, how patiently she taught her daughter how to cross a street safely. She had a feeling of futility when she saw her daughter repeating the mistake of her grandfather. She did not want to see in the family another victory for the tobacco companies, but she was faced with powerful rivals: the tobacco industry and Hollywood. The two collaborated to win over completely people like her father and made them hopelessly addicted to cigarettes. It is not easy to quit smoking, but things may become easier if smokers realize that smoking is a form of self-battering that also batters those who must sit by, and if we can really make “every home a smoke-free zone.”

Marriage has always been difficult. Why has it become so hard for couples to stay together in today’ society?

On the one hand, our modern social fabric is thin, and the permissiveness of society has created unrealistic expectations and thrown the family into chaos. On the other hand, marriage requires sexual, financial and emotional discipline, but people today are unwilling to exercise the self-discipline that marriage requires.Besides, couples today must also deal with all the cultural changes brought on in recent years by the women’s movement and sexual revolution. These and other realities of life erode the visions of marital bliss. If we lack adaptability, flexibility, genuine love and kindness, and an imagination strong enough to feel what the other is feeling, if we cannot bring difficulties out into the open, then marriage may come to the end of the road.Of course, divorce is not an evil act.For some people, it provides salvation and it can be a step toward a good life. However, marriage that do not fail but improve, that persist despite imperfections, offer a wondrous shelter for our mutual humanity.1.1)steering2)panic3)refrained4)intrude5)unify

Do you have this lingering doubt that you won’t be able to write something when you need to? Do you feel it’s like a constant fog or static that clouds the mind and you can never get out of its clutches?

As a matter of fact, it is possible to write something----not something great or pleasing but at least something usable, workable----when your mind is out of commission. The trick is to do all your cooking out on the table because your mind is incapable of doing any inside.Try simply to steer your mind in the direction or general vicinity of the thing you are trying to write about and start writing and keeping writing.Be as loose, drifting, quirky and jerky as possible when you write.Don’t think about what you are writing or what you have written or else you will overload the circuit again. Then take some little pieces of paper and simply read over from the beginning of what you wrote, and see if you can gather up something useful into one sentence and write it by itself o a little sheet of paper. Then, read through the little slips of paper a number of times and build a relationship among them until they get into different piles. At this point, you can finally begin to think, and that lab report which has been occupying your mind is no longer unreachable.

d.Here is no one person I dislike most but there are a couple of personality traits that I cannot tolerate: aggressiveness and selfishness.Aggressive people do not consider others’ feelings and will not think twice about hurting even those closest to them.I once had a neighbour who would beat his wife one day and appear loving the next. His wife lived in fear constantly but could do nothing because he was in control of her.Another personality trait I dislike is selfishness.Like aggressive people, selfish people only think of themselves. There are many everyday examples of selfishness such as those not willing to lend things to others and those not wanting to share exam tips even with their best friends. If you know someone with a combination of aggressiveness and selfishness, you should consider whether to call him or her a friend.(143 words)Unit 4 Enhance Your Language Awareness Working With Words and Expressions 1)1.They were smashing windows when the police arrived.2.70,000 tons of oil spilled from the tanker(油輪)and the sea was polluted.3.She volunteered to write an explanation of how the new computer system works.4.The book was inspired by the good deeds(事跡)of a real person.5.It was blowing hard and very soon the tree in front of my house fell with a great crash.6.The police report stated that he was once arrested for theft.7.The Dean(系主任)is not available at the moment, but you may call back in an hour.8.Up to two million people there are dependent on food aid.9.It was most unfortunate that I missed the chance to be interviewed by the company director.10.Can we find a mutually convenient time for us to meet? What is truth? Truth is the correct reflection of people’s knowledge about the objective world and its laws.Truth makes people full of hope and life full of brilliance and glory. Therefore, many people regard the pursuit of truth as the ultimate goal of their lives to the truth and make understanding contributions to mankind.Truth is both absolute and relative. We say that truth is absolute because truth can objectively reflect the essential of things. However, any truth is but people’s correct understanding of the development of things at a certain stage. Therefore, truth is relative and develops constantly.Sometimes, the brilliance of truth may dim but it will never die out.For some people, truth may seem beyond their reach. In fact, it is as long as we keep pursuing it heart and soul.

      第五篇:新世紀(jì)大學(xué)英語(yǔ)綜合教程4答案u1~u4

新世紀(jì)大學(xué)英語(yǔ)綜合教程4答案 U1 Cloze: Man has a blood tie with nature and nobody can live outside nature.Nature provides us with everything we need: the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat.For quite a long time after man began to live in the realm _ of nature, he lived in fear of its destructive forces. He used to regard nature with its elemental forces as something hostile to him.And even the forest was something wild and frightening to him.Very often, he was unable to obtain the merest daily necessities though he worked together with others stubbornly and collectively with his imperfect tools.Through his interaction with nature, man changed it gradually. He cut down forest, cultivated land, transferred various species of plants and animals to different climatic conditions, changed the shape and climate of his environment and transformed plants and animals. He subdued and disciplined electricity and compelled it to serve the interests of society.Nonetheless, with the constant expansion)of agriculture and industry, man has robbed nature too much of its irreplaceable resources, polluted his own living environment and caused about 95% of the species that have existed over the past 600 million years to become extinct and still many others to be endangered. The previous dynamic balance between man and nature is on the verge of breaking down.Man is now faced with the problem of how to stop, or at least to moderate the destructive effect of technology on nature.-------The crisis of the ecological situation has become a global problem. The solution to the problem depends on rational and wise organization both of production itself and care for Mother Nature. This can only be done by all humanity, rather than by individuals, enterprises or separate countries Translation:

My Understanding of Environmental Protection Man and the environment are closely related.Man relies on the environment for water, food and shelter.A harmonious relationship between man and the environment is essential for human survival on the earth. However, man and the environment have never been on such bad terms as they are now.As society develops, man's transformation of nature has severely polluted his living environment.Deforestation leads to changes in rainfall patterns, causing devastating floods, droughts and sandstorms. The discharge of chemical pollutants endangers our health and the lives of other beings. And mass production has resulted in the shortage of irreplaceable natural resources such as coal and oil.If we take no immediate and effective steps to protect our environment, human beings may be the next species to become extinct. We should do our best to protect our environment by planting more trees, taking care of wildlife, reducing industrial wastes, using renewable energy, and imposing heavy fines on environmentally-unfriendly activities, so as to preserve the environment for future generations.U2 Cloze: Technology is a “hot” issue nowadays. The defenders of technology stress its advantages while the opponents emphasize)its disadvantages.Neither side has ever taken the time to look at the opposite point of view. The defenders of technology hold that with technology, people's living conditions have been greatly improved. For example, the boom in productivity has made goods better and cheaper. Therefore, things that were once luxuries, such as jet travel and long-distance phone calls, have become necessities.Medical technology, in particular, has benefited us a lot, especially in prolonging life expectancy. On the other hand, the opponents of technology argue that technology makes life obviously worse.Telemarketing, traffic jams, and identity theft are all phenomena that make people consciously)unhappy. In addition, many people believe technology disrupts relationships and fractures community.Ever since the Industrial Revolution, the relationship between happiness and technology has been an eternal subject for social critics and philosophers, though economists and social scientists have seldom touched on the topic. However, in 1974 the economist Richard Easterlin did groundbreaking work on the relationship between prosperity and well-being.In his famous paper entitled “Does Economic Growth Improve the Human Lot?”, Easterlin showed that there was no real correlation between a nation's income level and its citizens' happiness in the developed countries. In fact, technology is neither good nor bad.It depends on what we want to do with it.Therefore, the responsibility belongs exclusively to humans who have to acquire a social conscience, to respect human beings, nature and its balances.Translation:

The Impact of the Mobile Phone on People's Lives Among the many technological inventions, the mobile phone impresses me most. The mobile phone brings considerable convenience to our lives. It not only enables us to keep in touch with each other almost anytime and anywhere but also helps us solve problems or do business efficiently. In emergencies, a mobile phone can even be a life-saver.Besides, its multi-functions add ease and color to our lives. With a mobile phone, we can receive mail, read news, listen to music, play games, and take pictures.Yet, the mobile phone has its disadvantages, too. Most of us have experienced the nuisance of unwanted or wrong calls. We are inconvenienced by calls on occasions when we least expect one.Besides, the technology infrastructure to support mobile communication has consumed valuable natural resources and caused significant environmental problems. It is reported that electromagnetic radiation waves from the phone may result in health problems.Despite its negative side, the advantages of the mobile phone outweigh its disadvantages.I believe that with advances in science and technology, improved and safer models of mobile phones will surely serve us still better.U3 Cloze: According to Craig Russell, when we make an initial effort in our personal quests for knowledge, we may not even know that a certain field of learning exists. But, after we have done some reading, we will get to know more about the topic(1).At the same time, we may feel that all the reading creates(2)more questions rather than answers them.We then realize how little we really(3)know and how much more we need to read and think and write.Russell suggests that we write after reading each time. His experience tells him that it is his writing that has led him to acquire a better grasp _(4)of the topic he studies.People may think that only those who know and who are sure(5)of themselves write. For Russell, however, it's just the opposite(6), for writing doesn't close things off – it opens things up.To say that the more we know, the more we know we don't know seems contradictory(7).According to Russell, modern physics tells us that reality _(8)itself is contradictory. The more closely scientists look into our physical _(9)reality, the more it slips away from them.In a way, the more they learn, the less they know.Craig Russell believes that a proper understanding will inevitably lead us away from the force and rigidity(10)of dogmatism and toward the flexibility and freedom of the individual(11).Therefore, we must temper our pride in knowing with the humility(12)of not knowing. The truth always exists there, but, it is like the rainbow(13)because we can never really grasp it, never hold it in our hands and truly know it.We can only, as William James said, “l(fā)ive today by what truth we can get today and be ready to call it falsehood(14)tomorrow”.Translation:

Barriers to Knowledge Transfer Knowledge transfer is a human phenomenon and plays a very important role in the process of human evolution. With the knowledge accumulated over generations, human beings can now build and transform societies with unprecedented knowledge resources. However, there are many barriers to knowledge transfer. For example, lack of trust and resistance to change undermine the transfer of knowledge.People are less likely to acquire knowledge from those whom they don't trust or to adopt new theories and practices they are not familiar with.Cultural and language barriers also hamper the transfer of knowledge between nations or ethnic groups. It would be almost impossible for people who speak different languages or dialects with different cultural backgrounds to communicate effectively, not to mention exchanging knowledge. An underdeveloped economy is another barrier to knowledge transfer. The lack of socio-economic and techno-environmental cooperation, as well as poor communications infrastructure, can greatly hinder the flow of knowledge within and between nations. To remove these barriers, people should change their attitude towards knowledge transfer and the learning of foreign languages and cultures. At the same time, efforts should be made to develop a better world economy.U4 Cloze: Most people have work to do.With work, they can enjoy(1)their lives. However, people who did physical(2)labor were looked down upon in the past. Many people were compelled _(3)to take manual labor because it was an absolute necessity(4)for them to earn a living and to support(5)their families.By contrast, people who did mental(6)work were highly respected.Under the influence of this idea, even today some people still idealize(7)their future when making choices for their career. What they care most about is whether the job can give them enough social status(8)rather than whether they can realize their values(9)in it.In their eyes, those who do manual labor should still be classified(10)as inferior in social status. In fact, there is no essential(11)difference between those who work with their hands and those who work with their mind(12).Whether a job is labor or work does not depend on the job itself but on people's attitude(13)towards it.As long as you like your job, you will think you are fortunate(14)enough to take it and you will do it enthusiastically.Translation:

My Career Choice When it comes to the choice of career, different people consider the matter from different perspectives.Personally I prefer to be a teacher.I have three reasons for my decision. The first reason is that the profession of teaching is in agreement with my personality.Being an outgoing, patient and understanding person, I think I am able to communicate with my students and understand their feelings easily, which constitutes an important factor in ensuring success in teaching. The second reason is that I am interested in the job.It would always give me great joy and satisfaction to see the happy faces of my students, to share my knowledge and life experience with them and to participate in their process of growing up.The third reason is related to my occupational attitude.I always believe that school teachers all over the world are respected for their profound knowledge and higher social status.I have always held my teachers in respect and I hope I would be respected as a teacher, too, in the future.I think teaching is an ideal career for me.Being a university student now, I will work hard to realize my dream.
