I had to wonder: why does the development of embryos need to go through such a complex process,rather than discarding previous forms and directly developing mammalian characteristics?

      “Biology,” I answered instinctively when asked to choose my major.I was intrigued by biological phenomena as a child, and the seemingly mystical precision of it filled me with questions.Why do pandas and rabbits, similar as juveniles, grow into two very different organisms?       第五篇:說說個人陳述(PS)那點(diǎn)事兒[定稿]

      剛剛在校內(nèi)和新浪微博發(fā)了一個狀態(tài):“每年到了留學(xué)申請的時候,總有人讓我給看PS,而且總說“你就花5分鐘看看給個評價就行”。殊不知,PS這種東西,是不能讓一個不了解你的人看的,否則,給出任何的評價都是不負(fù)責(zé)任的。要想得到滿意的評價和合理的建議,首先得讓看的人了解你,這又豈是5分鐘可以搞定的 呢?”沒想到大家的回復(fù)超出了我的預(yù)期,最讓我沒有想到的是,居然有很多人給出“教授也不了解申請者,就不能做判斷了么?”這樣的反對意見。這讓我很吃 驚,同時也更加理解了GRE作文考試中為什么大多數(shù)人的ARGUMENT分?jǐn)?shù)很低。這個問題實(shí)際上很好解釋,“教授”和“修改ps的人”是兩個目的完全不 同的主體,教授通過PS來客觀了解一個申請者,那么,教授得到的信息完全是PS中所傳遞出來的,教授僅僅是根據(jù)這個信息做出一個判斷而已。而修改ps的 人,需要做的是給申請者提供有效的建議,讓他能在ps中更好地傳遞出信息,從而讓讀者(也就是教授)能更好地了解申請者,這就要求修改ps的人必須要相當(dāng) 了解申請者,才能告訴他如何寫作是更加有效的。打個比方來說,幫忙修改情書的人和被追求的對象是完全不同的,看通緝犯畫像的人和幫助警察修改畫像的目擊證 人也是完全不同的。

      我今年幫兩個朋友修改過PS,當(dāng)然,申請結(jié)果現(xiàn)在還不知道,但是我大概統(tǒng)計(jì)了一下,平均我和每一個人面談了3次,充分了解了他們的各種背景以后才開始看他 們的PS,結(jié)果是兩個人的PS都重寫了2-3次,才達(dá)到“可修改”的狀態(tài)??梢哉f,干這活兒要是不想糊弄人的話,是極其勞神費(fèi)力的,如果不是像專業(yè)文書寫 作機(jī)構(gòu)或者咨詢公司這樣為了賺錢,或者像我這樣實(shí)在推脫不掉地給朋友義務(wù)幫忙的話。仔細(xì)想了想,實(shí)際上寫PS也沒有那么困難,我就簡單地寫一些我個人的感 受和建議好了。

      首先,寫ps一定不能上來就動手寫,想到什么寫什么,這樣寫出來的基本是浮云。每個人在寫ps之前,先要搞清楚自己到底有哪些事兒可寫,畢竟,大學(xué)四年所 做的事情,不是簡單回憶就能出來的。我的建議是,先用列表把大學(xué)四年干過的,你能回憶起來的,牛逼或不牛逼的各種事情羅列出來,并且簡單分類(學(xué)習(xí)、科 研、社會工作、實(shí)習(xí)、情感、其他)。這里的羅列可以不用特別具體,寫清楚是什么時間,做了什么事兒,跟誰有關(guān),能體現(xiàn)自己的什么特性就可以了。比如:

      (1)2007年,模擬電路設(shè)計(jì)實(shí)驗(yàn),想了一個特別的設(shè)計(jì)思路,做了一個和同學(xué)都不一樣的電路板,失敗了,跟張老師討論,改進(jìn),成功了。體現(xiàn)了我的創(chuàng)新精神。

      (2)2008年,在中關(guān)村賣電腦,早出晚歸,賺錢,請同學(xué)喝酒,high了,領(lǐng)導(dǎo)林先生表揚(yáng)我吃苦耐勞。

      事情不論大小,能回憶起來的都寫上,每件事情分類后再寫上要表現(xiàn)的自己的優(yōu)點(diǎn),比如創(chuàng)新精神、團(tuán)隊(duì)精神、領(lǐng)導(dǎo)力、堅(jiān)韌不拔等等。然后,從里面選出一些(數(shù)量根據(jù)自己的情況來定)作為候選素材。

      第二步,用中文或者英文(取決于你的英文表達(dá)水平)勾勒PS的提綱,確定文章的結(jié)構(gòu)。這里我建議大家不要去一味模仿網(wǎng)上所謂的“流行結(jié)構(gòu)”,比如一開始講 個故事,然

      后開始引入內(nèi)容等等,一定要根據(jù)自己的實(shí)際情況來決定如何搭建自己的ps結(jié)構(gòu)。總的原則是:一定要在2頁A4紙的范圍內(nèi),把自己的特點(diǎn)突出出 來,并且,最好有一個漸進(jìn)的過程,而在每一個漸進(jìn)過程中,都有一些具體的故事來表達(dá)自己的某一些特征。在設(shè)計(jì)結(jié)構(gòu)的時候,需要考慮到一些可能會在推薦信中 被放大的事實(shí),這些事實(shí)最終會和推薦信相互呼應(yīng)。比如,ps中寫了在某次課程設(shè)計(jì)中,自己和老師之間的一些交流,自己做了什么事兒。那么,推薦信就可以找 這個老師來寫,其中就可以從老師的角度來對你進(jìn)行肯定。

      第三步,把提綱進(jìn)行反復(fù)修改,直到重點(diǎn)已經(jīng)在結(jié)構(gòu)中突出,并且自己很清楚地知道每個部分要反映自己的什么特點(diǎn),以及和推薦信的呼應(yīng)如何實(shí)現(xiàn)。這個時候,才 可以開始動手寫ps。如果英文水平不夠好,可以先寫中文,再翻譯成英文。在寫作的時候需要注意的問題是:盡量減少對自己評價性的文字,比如“我覺得我在這 件事情中表現(xiàn)得非常勇猛”之類的,因?yàn)樗械脑u價都應(yīng)該交給讀者去做,而自己需要做的,僅僅是把故事講清楚就行了,比如“我在某天晚上,一人徒手干掉了4 個歹徒。”讀者可以通過文字直接得出“勇猛”的評價。

      最后,把文章交給一個非常了解你的朋友,或者是家人來讀,讓他們發(fā)表自己的看法。如果他們最后的看法是:“這是你么?”那說明你吹的有點(diǎn)過。如果他們看完 了說:”嗯,這是你。寫的挺真實(shí)的。”這說明你寫的不夠吸引人。如果看完了說:“靠,這是你么?嗯,還真是你?!惫材?,你的ps可以用了。你自己看完了 覺得不是自己,別人看完了覺得是你,這是ps的最佳狀態(tài)。至于英文的表達(dá),沒有必要追求“炫”,只要寫清楚,讓別人讀起來沒有障礙就好了。如果有條件,可 以在內(nèi)容修改確定以后找一些英文寫作水平比較好的人(無論中國人還是外國人都行)來給你做一些簡單的修改。

      基于以上的一些簡單建議,我想給出這么幾點(diǎn)附加的信息:

      (1)不要依賴任何中介機(jī)構(gòu)幫你寫ps,他們真的做不到,而且做的不會好。優(yōu)秀的中介或教育咨詢機(jī)構(gòu)應(yīng)該是教會你如何寫ps,然后不斷地指導(dǎo)你把ps修改到最佳的狀態(tài)。

      (2)不要找一個不了解你的人給你修改ps,他們真的做不到。一個不了解你的人看過以后,給出的任何建議都可能是錯的,因?yàn)樗涣私饽恪3?,你先跟他聊上幾次,把你的情況說清楚,當(dāng)然,前提是他有時間。

      (3)ps的內(nèi)容永遠(yuǎn)比文字表達(dá)重要,不要認(rèn)為native speaker就可以幫你搞定ps

      (4)有一些學(xué)校的ps是有具體要求的,一定要看清楚再寫。

      (5)盡量少看別人寫的ps,因?yàn)槟悴皇撬?,不需要在?nèi)容上“求同”。

      (6)ps不是萬能的,但是沒有ps是萬萬不能的。
