      0:54我的項(xiàng)目中,第一個(gè)項(xiàng)目的名字叫 “每天一秒鐘”。大意就是我每天都堅(jiān)持給自己錄一秒鐘的視頻,下半輩子一直堅(jiān)持下去,慢慢的將這些一秒鐘的視頻拼接起來(lái),將我的生活的片段拼接成一段連續(xù)的視頻,直到我沒(méi)有能力再錄制這些視頻為止。

      0:11So, I'm an artist.I live in New York, and I've been working in advertising for--ever since I left school,so about seven, eight years now, and it was draining.I worked a lot of late nights.I worked a lot of weekends, and I found myself never having time for all the projects that I wanted to work on on my own.0:29And one day I was at work and I saw a talk by Stefan Sagmeister on TED, and it was called “The power of time off,” and he spoke about how every seven years, he takes a year off from work so he could do his own creative projects, and I was instantly inspired, and I just said, “I have to do that.I have to take a year off.I need to take time to travel and spend time with my family and start my own creative ideas.” 0:54So the first of those projects ended up being something I called “One Second Every Day.” Basically I'm recording one second of every day of my life for the rest of my life, chronologically compiling these one-second tiny slices of my life into one single continuous video until, you know, I can't record them anymore.1:19The purpose of this project is, one: I hate not remembering things that I've done in the past.There's all these things that I've done with my life that I have no recollection of unless someone brings it up, and sometimes I think, “Oh yeah, that's something that I did.” And something that I realized early on in the project was that if I wasn't doing anything interesting, I would probably forget to record the video.So the day--the first time that I forgot, it really hurt me, because it's something that I really wanted to--from the moment that I turned 30, I wanted to keep this project going until forever, and having missed that one second, I realized, it just kind of created this thing in my head where I never forgot ever again.2:06So if I live to see 80 years of age, I'm going to have a five-hour video that encapsulates 50 years of my life.When I turn 40, I'll have a one-hour video that includes just my 30s.This has really invigorated me day-to-day, when I wake up, to try and do something interesting with my day.2:37Now, one of the things that I have issues with is that, as the days and weeks and months go by, time just seems to start blurring and blending into each other and, you know, I hated that, and visualization is the way to trigger memory.You know, this project for me is a way for me to bridge that gap and remember everything that I've done.Even just this one second allows me to remember everything else I did that one day.It's difficult, sometimes, to pick that one second.On a good day, I'll have maybe three or four seconds that I really want to choose, but I'll just have to narrow it down to one, but even narrowing it down to that one allows me to remember the other three anyway.3:31It's also kind of a protest, a personal protest, against the culture we have now where people just are at concerts with their cell phones out recording the whole concert, and they're disturbing you.They're not even enjoying the show.They're watching the concert through their cell phone.I hate that.I admittedly used to be that guy a little bit, back in the day, and I've decided that the best way for me to still capture and keep a visual memory of my life and not be that person, is to just record that one second that will allow me to trigger that memory of, “Yeah, that concert was amazing.I really loved that concert.” And it just takes a quick, quick second.4:12I was on a three-month road trip this summer.It was something that I've been dreaming about doing my whole life, just driving around the U.S.and Canada and just figuring out where to go the next day, and it was kind of outstanding.I actually ran out, I spent too much money on my road trip for the savings that I had to take my year off, so I had to, I went to Seattle and I spent some time with friends working on a really neat project.One of the reasons that I took my year off was to spend more time with my family,and this really tragic thing happened where my sister-in-law, her intestine suddenly strangled one day,and we took her to the emergency room, and she was, she was in really bad shape.We almost lost her a couple of times, and I was there with my brother every day.It helped me realize something else during this project, is that recording that one second on a really bad day is extremely difficult.It's not--we tend to take our cameras out when we're doing awesome things.Or we're, “Oh, yeah, this party, let me take a picture.” But we rarely do that when we're having a bad day, and something horrible is happening.And I found that it's actually been very, very important to record even just that one second of a really bad moment.It really helps you appreciate the good times.It's not always a good day, so when you have a bad one, I think it's important to remember it, just as much as it is important to remember the [good] days.6:08Now one of the things that I do is I don't use any filters, I don't use anything to--I try to capture the moment as much as possible as the way that I saw it with my own eyes.I started a rule of first person perspective.Early on, I think I had a couple of videos where you would see me in it, but I realized that wasn't the way to go.The way to really remember what I saw was to record it as I actually saw it.6:43Now a couple of things that I have in my head about this project are, wouldn't it be interesting if thousands of people were doing this? I turned 31 last week, which is there.I think it would be interesting to see what everyone did with a project like this.I think everyone would have a different interpretation of it.I think everyone would benefit from just having that one second to remember every day.Personally, I'm tired of forgetting, and this is a really easy thing to do.I mean, we all have HD-capable cameras in our pockets right now--most people in this room, I bet--and it's something that's--I never want to forget another day that I've ever lived, and this is my way of doing that, and it'd be really interesting also to see, if you could just type in on a website, “June 18, 2018,” and you would just see a stream of people's lives on that particular day from all over the world.7:38And I don't know, I think this project has a lot of possibilities, and I encourage you all to record just a small snippet of your life every day, so you can never forget that that day, you lived.7:47Thank you.7:49(Applause)

      From Kansas, Imoved on to lovely Arizona, where I taught in Flagstaff for a number of years,this time with middle school students.Luckily I didn't have to teach themAmerican government.Could teach them the more exciting topic of geography.Again, thrilled to learn.But what was interesting about this position I foundmyself in in Arizona, was I had this really extraordinarily eclectic groupof kids to work with in a truly public school.And we got to have these momentswhere we would get these opportunities.And one opportunity was we got to goand meet Paul Rusesabagina, which is the gentleman that the movie “HotelRwanda” is based after.And he was going to speak at the high school nextdoor to us.We could walk there;we didn't even have to pay for the buses.There was no expense cost.Perfect field trip.The problem thenbecomes how do you take seventh-and eighth-graders to a talk about genocideand deal with the subject in a way that is responsible and respectful, andthey know what to do with it.And so we chose to look at Paul Rusesabagina asan example of a gentleman who singularly used his life to do somethingpositive.I then challenged the kids to identify someone in their own life, orin their own story, or in their own world, that they could identify that haddone a similar thing.I asked them to produce a little movie about it.It's thefirst time we'd done this.Nobody really knew how to make these little movieson the computer.But they were into it.And I asked them to put their own voiceover it.It was the most awesome moment of revelation that when you askkids to use their own voice and ask them to speak for themselves, what they'rewilling to share.The last question of the assignment is: how do you plan touse your life to positively impact other people?       Fast-forward to Pennsylvania, where I find myself today.I teach at the Science LeadershipAcademy, which is a partnership school between the Franklin Institute and theschool district of Philadelphia.We are a nine through 12 public school,but we do school quite differently.I moved there primarily to be part of alearning environment that validated the way that I knew that kids learned, andthat really wanted to investigate what was possible when you are willing to letgo of some of the paradigms of the past, of information scarcity when mygrandmother was in school and when my father was in school and even when I wasin school, and to a moment when we have information surplus.So what do you do when the information is all around you? Whydo you have kids come to school if they no longer have to come there toget the information? In Philadelphia wehave a one-to-one laptop program, so the kids are bringing laptops with themeveryday, taking them home, getting access to information.And here's the thingthat you need to get comfortable with when you've given the tool to acquireinformation to students, is that you have to be comfortable with this idea ofallowing kids to fail as part of the learning process.We deal right now in the educational landscape with an infatuation with theculture of one right them to always have the right answer doesn't allow themto learn.So we did this project, and this is one of the artifacts ofthe project.I almost never show them off because of the issue of the idea offailure.My studentsproduced these info-graphics as a result of a unit that we decided to do at theend of the year responding to the oil spill.I asked them to take the examplesthat we were seeing of the info-graphics that existed in a lot of mass media,and take a look at what were the interesting components of it, and produce onefor themselves from a different man-made disaster from American history.Andthey had certain criteria to do it.They were a little uncomfortable with it,because we'd never done this before, and they didn't know exactly how to do it.They can talk--they're very smooth, and they can write very, very well, butasking them to communicate ideas in a different way was a little uncomfortablefor them.But I gave them the room to just do the thing.Go create.Go figureit out.Let's see what we can do.And the student that persistently turns outthe best visual product did not disappoint.This was done in like twoor three days.And this is the work of the student that consistently didit.And when I sat thestudents down, I said, “Who's got the best one?” And they immediatelywent, “There it is.” Didn't read anything.“There it is.”And I said, “Well what makes it great?” And they're like, “Oh,the design's good, and he's using good color.And there's some...” Andthey went through all that we processed out loud.And I said, “Go readit.” And they're like, “Oh, that one wasn't so awesome.” Andthen we went to another one--it didn't have great visuals, but it had greatinformation--and spent an hour talking about the learning process, because it wasn't about whether or not it was perfect,or whether or not it was what I could create;it asked them to create forthemselves.And it allowed them to fail, process, learn from.And when we doanother round of this in my class this year, they will do better this time.Because learning has to include an amount of failure,because failure is instructional in the process.很快的來(lái)看賓夕法尼亞,我在那里找到現(xiàn)在的自我。我在領(lǐng)導(dǎo)科學(xué)研究院教書(shū),這是Franklin研究所和費(fèi)城學(xué)區(qū)間的聯(lián)合建教學(xué)校。這是一所9到12年級(jí)的公立學(xué)校,但我們用十分不同的方法教學(xué)。我搬到那里主要是想成為學(xué)習(xí)環(huán)境的一部分,并證實(shí)我對(duì)孩子們學(xué)習(xí)方式所知,而且確實(shí)想調(diào)查,當(dāng)你愿意對(duì)一些過(guò)去的陳規(guī)放手,什么是可能的。信息匱乏的時(shí)代,從我奶奶上學(xué)時(shí),到我父親、甚至我上學(xué)時(shí),一直到信息爆炸的時(shí)代。所以當(dāng)信息隨手可得時(shí),你會(huì)怎么做?為什么你要孩子去學(xué)校?如果他們不再需要到校就能獲得知識(shí)?

      There are a lot ofways the people around us can help improve our lives.We don't bump into everyneighbor, so a lot of wisdom never gets passed on, though we do share the samepublic spaces.So over the pastfew years, I've tried ways to share more with my neighbors in public space,using simple tools like stickers, stencils and chalk.And these projects camefrom questions I had, like, how much are my neighbors paying for theirapartments?(Laughter)How can we lend and borrow more things without knockingon each other's doors at a bad time? How can we share more of our memories ofour abandoned buildings, and gain a better understanding of our landscape? Andhow can we share more of our hopes for our vacant storefronts, so ourcommunities can reflect our needs and dreams today?       In 2009, I lostsomeone I loved very much.Her name was Joan, and she was a mother to me, andher death was sudden and unexpected.And I thoughtabout death a lot, and this made me feel deep gratitude for the time I've had,and brought clarity to the things that are meaningful to my life now.But Istruggle to maintain this perspective in my daily life.I feel like it's easyto get caught up in the day-to-day, and forget what really matters to you.So with help fromold and new friends, I turned the side of this abandoned house into a giantchalkboard and stenciled it with a fill-in-the-blank sentence: “Before Idie, I want to...” So anyone walking by can pick up a piece of chalk,reflect on their lives, and share their personal aspirations in public space.I didn't know whatto expect from this experiment, but by the next day, the wall was entirelyfilled out, and it kept growing.And I'd like to share a few things that peoplewrote on this wall.“Before Idie, I want to be tried for piracy.”(Laughter)“Before I die, I wantto straddle the International Date Line.” “Before I die, I want tosing for millions.” “Before I die, I want to plant a tree.”“Before I die, I want to live off the grid.” “Before I die, Iwant to hold her one more time.” “Before I die, I want to besomeone's cavalry.” “Before I die, I want to be completelymyself.” So this neglectedspace became a constructive one, and people's hopes and dreams made me laughout loud, tear up, and they consoled me during my own tough times.It's aboutknowing you're not alone.It's about understanding our neighbors in new andenlightening ways.It's about making space for reflection and contemplation,and remembering what really matters most to us as we grow and change.I made this lastyear, and started receiving hundreds of messages from passionate people whowanted to make a wall with their community, so my civic center colleagues and Imade a tool kit, and now walls have been made in countries around the world,including Kazakhstan, South Africa, Australia, Argentina and beyond.Together,we've shown how powerful our public spaces can be if we're given theopportunity to have a voice and share more with one another.2009年,我失去了一個(gè)我摯愛(ài)的人 她的名字叫瓊,對(duì)我來(lái)講,她就像我的母親一樣 她死得很突然,沒(méi)有人預(yù)料到 然后我思考了很多關(guān)于死亡的事 然后..這件事讓我對(duì)我擁有的時(shí)光懷著深切致意 并且 顯現(xiàn)出了那些 對(duì)我的生命有真正意義的東西 但我卻很難在日常生活中保持這種心態(tài) 我覺(jué)得人們太容易被日復(fù)一日的瑣碎困住 而忘記什么才是真正重要的事

      Two of the mostvaluable things we have are time and our relationships with other people.Inour age of increasing distractions, it's more important than ever to find waysto maintain perspective and remember that life is brief and tender.Death issomething that we're often discouraged to talk about or even think about, butI've realized that preparing for death is one of the most empowering things youcan do.Thinking about death clarifies your life.Our shared spacescan better reflect what matters to us as individuals and as a community, andwith more ways to share our hopes, fears and stories, the people around us cannot only help us make better places, they can help us lead better lives.Thankyou.(Applause)
