一、日常交際中語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換的類型和功能
(一)類型

在單語(yǔ)交際中,有些語(yǔ)言太直白,會(huì)使說(shuō)話人和聽(tīng)話人都感到尷尬或羞澀而說(shuō)不出口。為了避免或減輕這樣的尷尬或羞澀,轉(zhuǎn)用另一種語(yǔ)言是雙語(yǔ)交際中的一種常見(jiàn)現(xiàn)象。(2)丈夫:披上大衣,外面太冷了。妻子:I love you.
(3)同事1:你在哪兒買(mǎi)的這件underpants?同事2:在南坪步行街一個(gè)小商店。
例(2)中,妻子用另一種語(yǔ)言曲線表達(dá)了心中的愛(ài)意和甜美,減少了直接用漢語(yǔ)產(chǎn)生的直白。例(3)中,說(shuō)話人覺(jué)得直接用“內(nèi)褲”有些說(shuō)不出口,于是用了underpants,好像拐了一個(gè)彎兒,沒(méi)有那么尷尬。3. 易釋歧義
英漢兩種語(yǔ)言在很多方面有著明顯的差異。從語(yǔ)系上,英語(yǔ)屬于印歐語(yǔ)系(Indo-European family),漢語(yǔ)屬于漢藏語(yǔ)系(Chinese-Tibetan family);從形態(tài)上,英語(yǔ)是拼音文字,漢語(yǔ)是方塊文字(square characters)。因此,在意義表達(dá)上,兩種語(yǔ)言各具特色和優(yōu)勢(shì),也各有缺點(diǎn)。有時(shí),漢語(yǔ)用很簡(jiǎn)潔的一、兩個(gè)詞就能表達(dá)清楚的意義,英語(yǔ)則要用很長(zhǎng)的文字描述,反之則相反。
(4)除了英語(yǔ),他不會(huì)其他外語(yǔ)。
除了英語(yǔ),他還會(huì)西班牙語(yǔ)。在漢語(yǔ)里,“除了”在音、形上完全一樣,卻有兩個(gè)截然不同的意思,即“所說(shuō)的不計(jì)算在內(nèi)”和“在什么之外,還有別的”。[4] 如果對(duì)學(xué)習(xí)漢語(yǔ)的英語(yǔ)人解釋其意,只需轉(zhuǎn)用except 和besides 兩個(gè)詞,既言簡(jiǎn)意賅,又一清二楚。因此,在雙語(yǔ)環(huán)境中,這樣的轉(zhuǎn)換是非常有效的。4. 避晦省時(shí)
在雙語(yǔ)交流中,當(dāng)碰到一些生僻的專業(yè)術(shù)語(yǔ)和行話時(shí),說(shuō)話人常轉(zhuǎn)用另一種語(yǔ)言,使晦澀難懂的意思既一目了然,又節(jié)省時(shí)間。
(5)Doctor:According to your symptom,I’d better add some tablets of paracetamol. Patient:Parace?? Doctor:Paracetamol. Patient:??
Doctor:Acetaminophen. Patient:Acetamin??
Doctor:That is 撲熱息痛。Patient:哦,就是撲熱息痛!
這一對(duì)話發(fā)生在英國(guó)的一家醫(yī)院,醫(yī)生是英國(guó)人,但懂一點(diǎn)點(diǎn)漢語(yǔ),患者是在英國(guó)居住不久的華僑。當(dāng)醫(yī)生意識(shí)到這位母語(yǔ)是漢語(yǔ)的患者聽(tīng)不懂藥品的通用名“paracetamol”時(shí),改用了商品名“acetaminophen”,但當(dāng)患者仍不能明白時(shí),醫(yī)生就用他蹩腳的漢語(yǔ)說(shuō)出了“撲熱息痛”,患者立刻就明白了,起到了避晦省時(shí)的作用,效果立竿見(jiàn)影。5. 幽默風(fēng)趣
在輕松、自由的雙語(yǔ)交際中,雙方常常從一種語(yǔ)言轉(zhuǎn)到另一種語(yǔ)言,使說(shuō)話幽默風(fēng)趣、開(kāi)心快活,也顯示出說(shuō)話人之間同行、同齡、同群體等的近密關(guān)系。(6)我有本book 要buy。他早就disappear 了。這樣的轉(zhuǎn)換在學(xué)英語(yǔ)專業(yè)的人群中是很常見(jiàn)的,聽(tīng)話人往往報(bào)以會(huì)心、忍俊不禁的一笑。在日益開(kāi)放、多元文化的社會(huì),各國(guó)這樣的雙語(yǔ)現(xiàn)象比比皆是,成為多元 文化的又一個(gè)特征。
二、漢英雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)及語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換
雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)指的是在非語(yǔ)言學(xué)科(如科學(xué)、數(shù)學(xué)、化學(xué)、物理等),使用除母語(yǔ)之外的至少一種外語(yǔ)(也稱目的語(yǔ))進(jìn)行教學(xué),母語(yǔ)和外語(yǔ)的使用比例呈母語(yǔ)多、外語(yǔ)少,到外語(yǔ)多、母語(yǔ)少,再到全外語(yǔ)的循序漸進(jìn)的變化規(guī)律。在我國(guó),英語(yǔ)是第一大外語(yǔ),漢外雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)自然從漢英雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)開(kāi)始。漢英雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)的目標(biāo),從時(shí)間上劃分,可分為終極目標(biāo)和過(guò)程目標(biāo)。終極目標(biāo)是培養(yǎng)既懂專業(yè)、又懂專業(yè)英語(yǔ)的雙語(yǔ)人才,過(guò)程目標(biāo)由每節(jié)課的教學(xué)目標(biāo)構(gòu)成,具體為學(xué)科目標(biāo)和語(yǔ)言目標(biāo)。學(xué)科目標(biāo)是指一堂課要教授的專業(yè)知識(shí)和技能,語(yǔ)言目標(biāo)則指圍繞學(xué)科目標(biāo)而設(shè)定的英語(yǔ)詞匯、句子等目標(biāo),兩個(gè)目標(biāo)綜述為教師能用英語(yǔ)教授專業(yè)知識(shí)和技能,學(xué)生能用英語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)、掌握、表述這些知識(shí)和技能。漢英語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換的頻
率、英語(yǔ)使用的多少及流暢程度等直接關(guān)系、影響漢英雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)終極目標(biāo)的實(shí)現(xiàn)。在我國(guó),漢英雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)正處于起步階段。課堂上語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換情況如何?圍繞學(xué)科教學(xué)目標(biāo),師生英語(yǔ)使用如下的案例分析可從一個(gè)側(cè)面回答這些問(wèn)題。
三、漢英雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)中語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換案例分析
(一)案例及分析原則簡(jiǎn)述
案例研究是教育科研方法中的一種,是通過(guò)對(duì)單一對(duì)象的研究尋求教育規(guī)律性的研究方法。[5] 我國(guó)漢英雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)目前處于起步階段,遠(yuǎn)沒(méi)有形成體系和規(guī)模,案例研究對(duì)認(rèn)識(shí)現(xiàn)階段雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)現(xiàn)狀、尋求雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)規(guī)律、探索雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)的有效途徑有特別重要的意義。然而,在漢英雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)的起步階段,要隨堂聽(tīng)課尋找分析樣本很不容易。本案例源自2007 年全國(guó)雙語(yǔ)研究中心和湖南長(zhǎng)沙同升湖實(shí)驗(yàn)學(xué)校電視臺(tái)聯(lián)合錄制的一節(jié)小學(xué)數(shù)學(xué)雙語(yǔ)課,任課教師是長(zhǎng)春樹(shù)勛小學(xué)數(shù)學(xué)教師金嵐,授課對(duì)象是小學(xué)二年級(jí)學(xué)生,本課主題是solve division problems。[6] 為了將錄像聲音文件轉(zhuǎn)記為文字文本,并確保聽(tīng)記的準(zhǔn)確性,我們制定了三條原則:1)原樣保持原則:當(dāng)遇到語(yǔ)法、用詞等錯(cuò)誤時(shí),不做任何修改,如“Six multiply by eight divided by eight is six.”。所以,以下分析中呈現(xiàn)的都是原始句。2)斷句原則:如果兩個(gè)單詞在語(yǔ)流中停頓時(shí)間很短或幾乎沒(méi)有停頓時(shí),就斷在一句里,如“Ok,now,look at the sea.” 句中的“ok”和“now”。有時(shí)雖是兩句話,但因意義關(guān)聯(lián)太緊密,也算在一個(gè)大句里,如:“Six multiply by eight is forty-eight,一共有48 個(gè)長(zhǎng)方形。再用forty-eight rectangles in all divided by eight is six,就能擺出six sun.”。3)標(biāo)點(diǎn)使用原則:如果一個(gè)句子以英語(yǔ)開(kāi)頭,句末就用英語(yǔ)句號(hào)“.”,反之就用漢語(yǔ)句號(hào)“?!?;如遇較長(zhǎng)時(shí)間的思考、停頓、間隙、等待、小組討論、聽(tīng)不清等,就分別用英、漢省略號(hào)“?”、“??”示之。由此得到414 個(gè)句子,每個(gè)句子按在課堂上出現(xiàn)的先后順序編號(hào)(以下編號(hào)例句均源自此轉(zhuǎn)記文本)。根據(jù)語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換分析的需要,分別列出三個(gè)表格,表1為按時(shí)間順序記錄的總表,表2 為全英句表,表3 為內(nèi)和句間語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換表。[7] 需要說(shuō)明的是,盡管嚴(yán)格遵循 了這樣的原則,但是我們的聽(tīng)記和統(tǒng)計(jì)仍難免有遺漏和 不準(zhǔn)確的地方。
(二)轉(zhuǎn)換情況分析 1. 轉(zhuǎn)換類型
由于詞內(nèi)轉(zhuǎn)換在漢英雙語(yǔ)交際中本來(lái)就不多見(jiàn),再加上本堂課上未出現(xiàn)反問(wèn)句,因此,本堂課中師生語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換的類型只出現(xiàn)了句內(nèi)轉(zhuǎn)換和句際轉(zhuǎn)換兩種,如:(7)Sentence 67: 有一個(gè)機(jī)器人有one circle and six rectangle。(8)Sentence 282:It’s wrong. Why?
Sentence 283:因?yàn)?,那里?2 塊糖平均分給幾個(gè)小朋友。例(7)屬句內(nèi)轉(zhuǎn)換,例(8)屬句際轉(zhuǎn)換。2. 轉(zhuǎn)換原因或動(dòng)機(jī)
本案例中的語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換有從英語(yǔ)到漢語(yǔ)和從漢語(yǔ)到英語(yǔ)兩個(gè)方向,教師和學(xué)生都在進(jìn)行著轉(zhuǎn)換。但在漢英雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)的起步階段,教師語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換的主導(dǎo)地位特別突出,是完全主動(dòng)的。因此,下面主要就教師語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換的原因和動(dòng)機(jī)進(jìn)行分析。由于未與任課教師就轉(zhuǎn)換的原因或動(dòng)機(jī)進(jìn)行交流,下面的分析是根據(jù)課堂語(yǔ)境對(duì)其原因或動(dòng)機(jī)的推斷。以此,其主要原因或動(dòng)機(jī)有四種,前兩種是從英語(yǔ)到漢語(yǔ),后兩種是從漢語(yǔ)到英語(yǔ)。1)無(wú)意重復(fù)
在教學(xué)中,特別是在提問(wèn)時(shí),教師先用英語(yǔ)說(shuō)了一遍,后用漢語(yǔ)重復(fù)了一遍。(9)Sentence 156:Can you? 能嗎?
(10)Sentence 218:Which one do you like best? 更喜歡哪一種? 像“Can you?”、“Which one do you like best?” 這樣的句子是在英語(yǔ)課上教師用得多、學(xué)生聽(tīng)得熟的語(yǔ)言,完全是在學(xué)生的理解范圍,沒(méi)有必要翻譯成漢語(yǔ),教師此時(shí)的轉(zhuǎn)換可能是在等待學(xué)生反應(yīng)或回答時(shí)的無(wú)意重復(fù)。2)保障理解
在雙語(yǔ)課堂教學(xué)兩個(gè)目標(biāo)中,學(xué)科目標(biāo)總是排在第一位的。在本堂課中,教師從英語(yǔ)轉(zhuǎn)到漢語(yǔ)主要是在一些重要的數(shù)學(xué)知識(shí)點(diǎn)上,是為了確保學(xué)生對(duì)學(xué)科知識(shí)要點(diǎn)的理解,如:(11)Sentences 112-115:
T: Six multiply by eight is forty-eight,一共有48 個(gè)長(zhǎng)方形。再用forty-eight rectangles in all divided by eightis six,就能擺出six sun. T: Are you clear? S: Yes.
T: 那么這是分步算式,綜合算式呢?分步算式和綜合算式都是非常重要的專業(yè)術(shù)語(yǔ)和 知識(shí)點(diǎn),此時(shí)轉(zhuǎn)到漢語(yǔ),不僅省時(shí)省力,重要的是不用生疏難懂的英語(yǔ)表述和解釋,使關(guān)鍵點(diǎn)的思考和理解一步到位,保證學(xué)科目標(biāo)的實(shí)現(xiàn)。3)組織教學(xué)
在組織教學(xué)時(shí),教師充分利用學(xué)生在英語(yǔ)課上聽(tīng)得滾瓜爛熟、幾乎能脫口而出的語(yǔ)言,如Very good、Think it over、You,please、Yes or no、What else 等。這樣,既增加了學(xué)生使用這些語(yǔ)言的機(jī)會(huì),又創(chuàng)造了雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)的英語(yǔ)大環(huán)境,為雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)語(yǔ)言目標(biāo)的完成起到了支撐、順接的作用。4)完成語(yǔ)言目標(biāo)
如前所述,語(yǔ)言目標(biāo)指圍繞教授學(xué)科知識(shí)、傳授學(xué)科技能所需和要求掌握的目的語(yǔ),主要包括詞匯、短語(yǔ)或句型等。本堂課的學(xué)科目標(biāo)是在乘法應(yīng)用題的基礎(chǔ)上學(xué)習(xí)除法應(yīng)用題,圍繞這一目標(biāo)所確立的語(yǔ)言目標(biāo)自然就是關(guān)于除法的詞匯、短語(yǔ)、句型等。在保證學(xué)科目標(biāo)完成的前提下,教師不時(shí)從漢語(yǔ)切換到英語(yǔ),并反復(fù)使用了multiply,multiplied by,division,divide,divide?equally into?,How many?in all?等??梢?jiàn),教師從漢語(yǔ)轉(zhuǎn)換
到英語(yǔ),是為了完成語(yǔ)言目標(biāo),從而也為下一次課的學(xué)科目標(biāo)和語(yǔ)言目標(biāo)的完成奠定基礎(chǔ)。
(三)教學(xué)效果分析(下轉(zhuǎn)第26 頁(yè))本案例師生間的語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換,從一定程度上反映了學(xué)生的學(xué)習(xí)情況和效果,主要體現(xiàn)在以下幾個(gè)方面。
1. 有較強(qiáng)的雙語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)意識(shí)
我國(guó)漢英雙語(yǔ)教學(xué),在短短的十幾年時(shí)間里,由零進(jìn)展到零星,從實(shí)驗(yàn)性發(fā)展到逐步實(shí)施。在那些實(shí)施了雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)的學(xué)校,學(xué)生經(jīng)歷了一個(gè)從零概念到嘗鮮,從實(shí)驗(yàn)性到常態(tài)性的雙語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)過(guò)程。本案例中的學(xué)生,在教師的引導(dǎo)和語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換影響下,也自如地進(jìn)行著轉(zhuǎn)換,用雙語(yǔ)表達(dá)對(duì)學(xué)習(xí)內(nèi)容的理解。(12)Sentences 92-94 S: 用6 乘以8 等于48 個(gè)。Forty-eight divided by eight is six. S: 再用forty-eight divided by eight is six. S: 48 除以8 等于6.(13)Sentences 295-296:
T: Divide twelve candies equally into three groups. S: Twelve divide by four is three. 是把12 塊糖果平均分給4 個(gè)小朋友,每個(gè)小朋友3 個(gè)。從上述兩例中可以看出,學(xué)生已經(jīng)建立了較強(qiáng)的雙語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)意識(shí),雙語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)已成為一種習(xí)慣。學(xué)生這樣的意識(shí)和習(xí)慣是順利實(shí)施雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)、完成雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)任務(wù)的基礎(chǔ)和前提。2. 有較強(qiáng)的用雙語(yǔ)思維的能力
如前所述,本案例共有414 句,全英句235 句,句內(nèi)轉(zhuǎn)換句51 句,兩者相加為286 句,占總句數(shù)的69%,在這286 句中,約120 多句是直接用于數(shù)學(xué)問(wèn)題的。這說(shuō)明,在這樣一堂數(shù)學(xué)雙語(yǔ)課中,全英句和轉(zhuǎn)換句超過(guò)了總數(shù)的一半。這從數(shù)量上表明,學(xué)生英、漢思維幾乎各占一半,英語(yǔ)思維還略占優(yōu)勢(shì)。
上面例(12)中,學(xué)生由漢語(yǔ)“用6 乘以8 等于48個(gè)”直接過(guò)渡到英語(yǔ)“Forty eight divided by eight is six”,再由句內(nèi)轉(zhuǎn)換句“ 再用forty-eight divided by eight issix”,轉(zhuǎn)用母語(yǔ)“48 除以8 等于6”。學(xué)生的轉(zhuǎn)換非常自如,其數(shù)學(xué)雙語(yǔ)思維好像達(dá)到了無(wú)縫對(duì)接的程度。(14)Sentence 119 T: Ok,you,please!

例(13)和(14)顯示,如果教師在用英語(yǔ)講解和表達(dá)時(shí),學(xué)生不假思索地也用英語(yǔ)在思考和表達(dá)!這充分表明,學(xué)生的思路是清晰的,轉(zhuǎn)換是自如、恰當(dāng)、有效的,他們的雙語(yǔ)思維能力是比較強(qiáng)的。
3. 有較強(qiáng)的用目的語(yǔ)表達(dá)的能力 如前所述,本堂課的學(xué)科目標(biāo)是在已學(xué)的乘法應(yīng)用題的基礎(chǔ)上學(xué)習(xí)除法應(yīng)用題。學(xué)生在學(xué)習(xí)除法應(yīng)用題時(shí),不但完全能夠用用英語(yǔ)表達(dá)自己的思維、陳述乘除法問(wèn)題,而且有時(shí)教師都未說(shuō)英語(yǔ),他們卻不由自主地轉(zhuǎn)用英語(yǔ)表達(dá)!例(12)第92 句是很好的例子,當(dāng)學(xué)生用漢語(yǔ)說(shuō)了“用6 乘以8 等于48 個(gè)”后,馬上轉(zhuǎn)換用英語(yǔ)表述“Forty-eight divided by eight is six.”,而且,后者是前者的逆運(yùn)算!這反映出學(xué)生不凡的目的語(yǔ)表達(dá)能力,學(xué)習(xí)效果可見(jiàn)一斑!
四、結(jié)語(yǔ)
通過(guò)對(duì)語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換的簡(jiǎn)要梳理和一個(gè)典型案例分析,可得出以下結(jié)論。第一,要實(shí)現(xiàn)雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)的過(guò)程目標(biāo)和終極目標(biāo),語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換是重要的研究元素。第二,認(rèn)識(shí)語(yǔ)碼換在漢英雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)不同階段的特點(diǎn)和規(guī)律、探索循序漸進(jìn)地增加目的語(yǔ)使用、培養(yǎng)學(xué)生用語(yǔ)思維的意識(shí)和
能力、保證每堂課雙重目標(biāo)的實(shí)現(xiàn)的有效途徑是語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換研究的重要任務(wù)。第三,數(shù)學(xué)是學(xué)科性非常強(qiáng)的學(xué)科,要在這一學(xué)科實(shí)施雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)難度非常大。但本案例的統(tǒng)計(jì)分析結(jié)果表明,教師的雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)和學(xué)生的雙語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)是有效的,且效果略高于起步階段水平。因此,數(shù)學(xué)雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)是可行的。第四,只有實(shí)施了雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)的地區(qū),學(xué)生才有機(jī)會(huì)走進(jìn)雙語(yǔ)教學(xué)課堂,才有機(jī)會(huì)接受雙語(yǔ)教育。第五,只有雙語(yǔ)學(xué)生才有語(yǔ)碼轉(zhuǎn)換的意識(shí)和能力,才能用雙語(yǔ)思維,才能用雙語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)學(xué)科知識(shí)。第六,只要持之以恒、循序漸進(jìn)、科學(xué)施教,學(xué)生雙語(yǔ)思維的意識(shí)和能力是能夠培養(yǎng)起來(lái)的,學(xué)科的雙重目標(biāo)是可以實(shí)現(xiàn)的。第七,只有完成每堂課的雙重目標(biāo),才能完成為國(guó)家輸送既懂專業(yè)、又懂專業(yè)英語(yǔ)的雙語(yǔ)人才的終極目標(biāo)。參考文獻(xiàn): [1] Jack Richards,John Platt & Heidi Weber. 劉潤(rùn)清等譯.朗讀曼語(yǔ)言學(xué)詞典[Z].太原:山西教育出版社,1992.50.
