Provided you fulfill the terms of the credit , we will accept and pay at maturity the誤: 在貴公司履行信用證條款的條件下,我行將接受并于成熟之日支付信用證下提示的匯票。

正:我行將承兌并于期滿時(shí)支付信用證項(xiàng)下提示的匯票。此句中的accept 和maturity 都是我們熟悉的詞匯,其常用意義分別為“接受”和“成熟”,而在此處,accept 意為“承兌,即遠(yuǎn)期匯票的付款人接受匯票,正式確認(rèn)如期支付匯票金額的責(zé)任”;maturity 意為“(票據(jù)的)到期”。這兩個(gè)錯(cuò)誤顯然是由于忽略了這兩個(gè)詞在外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)中的特別意義所致。

由此可見,在外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)翻譯中遇到一詞多義的詞匯時(shí),千萬(wàn)不能想當(dāng)然,要根據(jù)上下文來(lái)確定其含義。在不能確定時(shí)要勤查專業(yè)詞典和書籍,弄懂詞匯的確切意義和可能具有的特定意義,才能使傳達(dá)的內(nèi)容符合原文。

2.以虛指實(shí)的名詞

3.名詞復(fù)數(shù)變義

在外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)中,有些名詞在從單數(shù)構(gòu)成復(fù)數(shù)時(shí)詞義發(fā)生了變化。有些名詞的單、復(fù)數(shù)意義截然不同,復(fù)數(shù)意義并非單數(shù)意義的擴(kuò)展或引申,也非聯(lián)想意義。處理這類詞的翻譯時(shí)需要格外小心,認(rèn)真辨析,不能簡(jiǎn)單當(dāng)作復(fù)數(shù)概念看待,不然的話,譯文也容易出現(xiàn)偏差。如:

(1)Commodity futures t rading is an important part of the buying and selling process(商品的期貨交易是買賣過(guò)程中的重要組成部分).(2)For accounting and other purposes , the above2mentioned current asset s and liabilitiesare those actually shown in the Balance Sheet as per incorporation date(為了核算和其他目的,上述流動(dòng)資產(chǎn)及負(fù)債就是那些實(shí)際反映在公司成立那天的資產(chǎn)負(fù)債表內(nèi)的數(shù)字)以上兩例中futures 和liabilities 的意義分別為“期貨”和“負(fù)債”,與各自單數(shù)形式的抽象意義“未來(lái)”和“責(zé)任”相去甚遠(yuǎn)。類似的例子還有: securities 表示“有價(jià)證券”,而非“安全”,facilities 表示“設(shè)備,設(shè)施”, 而非“容易,便利”,等等。這類詞盡管為數(shù)不多,但是若譯者稍有疏忽大意,處理不慎,就會(huì)造成誤譯。

二、全面把握外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)詞匯的翻譯原則

1.把握適合的語(yǔ)場(chǎng)

語(yǔ)場(chǎng), 即話語(yǔ)范圍, 是指在交際過(guò)程中實(shí)際發(fā)生的事, 以及參與者所從事的活動(dòng), 其中語(yǔ)言活動(dòng)是重要組成部分。外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)的語(yǔ)場(chǎng)既包括外貿(mào)工從事的各種進(jìn)出口業(yè)務(wù)活動(dòng), 又包括他們用以表達(dá)進(jìn)出口業(yè)務(wù)的語(yǔ)言。在外貿(mào)活動(dòng)中, 為了達(dá)到有效交際, 主要語(yǔ)言活動(dòng)必須緊緊圍繞著貿(mào)易活動(dòng)這個(gè)話題進(jìn)行, 貿(mào)易工必須使用能夠有效表達(dá)這個(gè)話題的語(yǔ)言項(xiàng)目, 如貿(mào)易術(shù)語(yǔ)、貿(mào)易習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)、固定語(yǔ)法和語(yǔ)篇格式(例如國(guó)際貿(mào)易定價(jià)單、合同)等。也就是說(shuō), 外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)的語(yǔ)域在很大程度上是由語(yǔ)場(chǎng)來(lái)決定的。在國(guó)際貿(mào)易的悠久歷史中, 其詞匯、語(yǔ)法結(jié)構(gòu)、習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)等已經(jīng)形成了許多固定表達(dá)方式, 而這些表達(dá)方式大多數(shù)是由語(yǔ)場(chǎng)決定的。在外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)翻譯時(shí), 譯者必須使用表達(dá)國(guó)際貿(mào)易語(yǔ)言意義的詞匯和習(xí)慣用語(yǔ),也應(yīng)當(dāng)符合外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)的語(yǔ)場(chǎng)義。

2.了解不同的文化

翻譯意味著傳達(dá)信息。其準(zhǔn)確性依賴于很多因素: 文章本身的可信度、文章類型、目標(biāo)讀者、被翻譯文章在使用中的風(fēng)格以及翻譯的目的。而在實(shí)際翻譯過(guò)程中, 譯者要了解原文讀者對(duì)文章的理解如何以及譯文讀者的反應(yīng)如何是很困難的, 也就是說(shuō)如果譯者不了解原

文和譯文各自所代表的文化的特點(diǎn), 那么他就很難達(dá)到對(duì)等翻譯的目的。中國(guó)人和西方人在觀察和思維上都存在著差異, 因而對(duì)同一種東西及其特征和屬性有著不同的概念和表達(dá)方式, 翻譯時(shí)譯者必須清楚地了解中西方對(duì)某一具體事物各自不同的表達(dá)方式, 越過(guò)英漢表達(dá)形式的局限進(jìn)行意義上的對(duì)等翻譯。例如:

(1)We are interested in the samples you sent to onJuly 4 and have decided to place a trial order for 300clests of black tea and 400clests of golden sugar,but onlyif you can guarantee dispatch in time to reach us by theend of July.對(duì)于貴公司7 月4 日寄來(lái)的樣品我們非常有興趣。現(xiàn)決定試定300 箱紅茶和400 箱赤砂糖。惟請(qǐng)規(guī)范法保證能在7 月底之前及時(shí)交貨。

在這一例中如果將black tea 譯成“黑茶”、goldensugar 譯成“金色糖”的話, 會(huì)令人難以理解, 而將它們分別譯成“紅茶”和“赤砂糖”則符合中國(guó)人的文化習(xí)慣。

三、密切注意詞匯慣用法和搭配

(1)The exporter has drawn a draft on the importer for USD 5 ,800 with relevant shippingdocument s attached.此句中to draw a draft 是to write out a draft ,即“開立一張匯票”之義,而該義一般不用to open a draft 來(lái)表達(dá)。明確了該搭配的意義后,全句可譯為:“出口方開立了一張金額為5 800 美元、以進(jìn)口方為付款人的匯票,隨附相關(guān)貨運(yùn)單據(jù)”。再如,in favor of 和in the red 在外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)中也有其習(xí)慣用法和意義,翻譯時(shí)要引起注意。例(10)中的in favor of 根據(jù)上下文應(yīng)譯為“以某某為受益人”,而不應(yīng)譯為“支持”或“有利于”。

當(dāng)然,外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)合同語(yǔ)言還有其他一些特點(diǎn),如多用正式和法律用詞,多在here , there ,where 后加后綴使用等,限于篇幅,在此不逐一列出這些翻譯錯(cuò)誤。總之,在翻譯外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)合同時(shí),了解類似用法特點(diǎn)是十分必要的,只有這樣才能保證合同翻譯的準(zhǔn)確無(wú)誤,才能充分體現(xiàn)合同具有的法律效力。
