如: Thanks for listening.
We expressed our thanks.
My wife also asks to join her greeting and thanks.
A thousand thanks for your invitation.
Many thanks for your letter of 17 March.
Thanks./ Many thanks./ Thanks a lot./ Thanks very much.等。但是,根據(jù)英語習(xí)慣,我們可以說Thanks a lot,卻不能說:Thank you a lot.2.
Each of them phoned to thank me.
No more tea, thank you, I’ve had my fill. There’s no need to thank me—I was only doing my job.

Harvard University named historian Drew Gilpin Faust as its first female president on Sunday, ending a lengthy and secretive search to find a successor(接任者)to Lawrence Summers. The seven-member Harvard Corporation elected Faust, a noted scholar on History of the American South and dean of Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, as the university’s 28th president.“This is a great day, and a historic day for Harvard,” James R.Houghton, chairman of the presidential search committee, said in a statement.“Drew Faust is an inspiring and accomplished leader, a superb scholar, a dedicated(獻身的)teacher, and a wonderful human being.” Her selection is noteworthy given the heated debates over Summers’ comments that genetic differences between the sexes might help explain the lack of women in top science jobs.Faust has been dean of Radcliffe since 2001, two years after the former women’s college was combined into the university as a research center with a mission to study gender issues(性別問題).Some professors have quietly groused that the 371-year-old university is appointing a fifth president who is not a scientist. No scientist has had the top job since James Bryant Conant retired in 1953;its last four have come from the fields of classics, law, literature and economics.Faust is the first Harvard president who did not receive a degree from the university since Charles Chauncy, a graduate of Cambridge University, who died in office in 1762.She attended the University of Pennsylvania.“Teaching staff turned to her constantly,” said Sheldon Hackney, a former president of the University of Pennsylvania and historian who worked closely with Faust.“She’s very clear. She has a sense of humor, but she’s very strong-minded.You come to trust in her because she’s so solid.”

For most teachers, a day never seems long enough to get all the planning, teaching or paper correcting done.Parent volunteers, if available, can do a lot of help.Teachers can benefit from such help.New books can be marked Computers can be turned on or shut off properly.Teaching equipment can be cleaned and stored away. The list of jobs that parent volunteers can do is endless. Some schools even provide a coordinator to introduce these volunteers to teachers. It is important to make sure volunteers feel useful and are given a variety of tasks to do.When a volunteer realizes there is no real contribution to make, he or she will not come back.Sometimes being given too many boring repetitive tasks drives volunteers away, too.A teacher who wants to use the service of volunteers successfully should give time to the planning of tasks.Make a list of possible tasks for the volunteer to do.The tasks can be kept in a notebook.Information such as class schedule, names of students and school rules could also be included in the notebook. When the volunteer arrives, the teacher may not immediately have an opportunity to explain tasks. The volunteer can then check the notebook and pick a job on his or her own decision. It is obvious that the class benefits from having adults.Children often behave better with the volunteer near them. Some volunteers work one-on-one with children or with small groups, helping children get needed attention. The volunteer can complete paper correcting or other tasks listed above, freeing the teacher for more teaching time.Meanwhile, parent volunteers do need to understand that any information about children is to remain confidential. They should be coached on appropriate methods in a school system. They especially need to be careful of what they say.1.The first two paragraphs imply that ________.A.teachers should ask parents for help in class B.parent volunteers are really needed in school C.parents are available to teachers ha most schools D.being a parent volunteer is popular in many schools 2.In order to keep parent volunteers interested, ________.A.a coordinator is necessary in every school B.teachers shouldn’t give them premising tasks C.schools should pay them for their good services D.tasks given to them should be considered carefully 3.Why should a teacher list possible tasks in a notebook? A.Parent volunteers are interested in the tasks listed.B.It is helpful for parents to get involved in their jobs quickly.C.The teacher wants parent volunteers to choose jobs on their own.D.It is necessary for parent volunteers to know all the tasks to do in class.4.Which of the following statements is True according to the text?
Would you intervene if you saw a parent hit a child?
A grandparent’s job is easier than a parent’s.
The death of a parent can cause long-lasting psychological damage.
There’s nothing worse than for a parent to ill-treat a child.
My parents both work in education.
Children depend on their parents for food and clothing.
The tired children trailed along behind their parents.
This tooth is giving me pain.
Mary felt a sharp pain in her left arm.
Chest pains may be symptomatic of heart disease.
I have pain [a pain, pains] in my back.
用作不可數(shù)名詞,可用much, little等修飾;用作可數(shù)名詞時,可用many, few等修飾。如:
Was it possible to have so much pain that it could no longer hurt?
After falling from a ladder, he had many physical aches and pains.
I could not stand the pain any longer.
I hope you will forgive me if I have given you pain.
He had written the book with great pains.
We must give him something for his pains.
Much pains, no gains.
