      推薦信是了解申請(qǐng)人的重要依據(jù),在研究生課程中尤其如此。申請(qǐng)人可以選擇現(xiàn)在或以前的老師、教授或雇主。推薦人必須熟悉學(xué)生的學(xué)習(xí)情況,了解學(xué)生的學(xué)習(xí)目的是否明確,在學(xué)術(shù)上是否有前途,以及學(xué)生的適應(yīng)能力、創(chuàng)造能力、品行和特長(zhǎng)。

      書寫推薦信的最理想的人選是一封由系主任寫,一封由專業(yè)課教授寫,一封由自己的導(dǎo)師寫。不過(guò),對(duì)方若無(wú)規(guī)定,則除了自己的親屬之外,任何人皆可為推薦人。推薦人一般應(yīng)具備高級(jí)技術(shù)職稱,如教授、副教授、研究員、副研究員等。如果推薦人在國(guó)內(nèi)外學(xué)術(shù)界享有盛譽(yù),或者被申請(qǐng)就讀學(xué)校聘為客座教授,或者曾經(jīng)在該校講過(guò)學(xué),那么這樣的推薦人寫的推薦信就具有很強(qiáng)的效力了。

      二、推薦信的內(nèi)容

      推薦信一般應(yīng)包括下列內(nèi)容:

      被推薦人的基本情況介紹。側(cè)重于個(gè)人的畢業(yè)時(shí)間、學(xué)校、所獲學(xué)位以及個(gè)人的專業(yè)經(jīng)歷。

      推薦人對(duì)被推薦人的基本評(píng)價(jià)。側(cè)重于被推薦人的專業(yè)基礎(chǔ)、個(gè)性、特點(diǎn)、工作態(tài)度和在學(xué)術(shù)上的前途估計(jì)。若是推薦研究生,推薦人還需進(jìn)一步說(shuō)明其深造學(xué)習(xí)的基礎(chǔ)和當(dāng)前所具備的研究能力。顯然,恰如其分地評(píng)價(jià)被推薦人的基礎(chǔ)、能力和前途,比言過(guò)其實(shí)的贊譽(yù)更令人情服,更具有實(shí)際意義。

      推薦人可以著重介紹被推薦人曾經(jīng)獲得的獎(jiǎng)勵(lì),發(fā)表過(guò)的論文,參加過(guò)的重要學(xué)術(shù)會(huì)議,以及曾在學(xué)生組織或?qū)W術(shù)團(tuán)體中的任職等來(lái)支持自己的評(píng)價(jià)。

      那么,到底怎么索取推薦信呢?這里要宣傳一種“全周期”申請(qǐng)理念,所謂強(qiáng)扭的瓜不甜。你要死要活,托關(guān)系死纏爛打乞討來(lái)的推薦信往往沒有什么效力。記住,當(dāng)你決定申請(qǐng)的那一刻開始,申請(qǐng)就已經(jīng)開始了,而絕不是等到提交申請(qǐng)材料的那幾個(gè)月。

      如何選擇推薦人

      既然推薦信是為了讓老美更好的認(rèn)識(shí)自己,那么自己就必須要在推薦信里全面的展現(xiàn)出自己的特色和優(yōu)勢(shì),這里很有必要談?wù)勥x擇推薦人的問題,要展現(xiàn)自己不同的特點(diǎn)就必須找到相對(duì)應(yīng)的推薦人,總體來(lái)說(shuō),一般3封推薦信至少2封是要涉及到申請(qǐng)者學(xué)術(shù)方面的內(nèi)容,那么這2封涉及到自己學(xué)術(shù)方面的推薦信最好找上過(guò)自己課的,或者是做過(guò)項(xiàng)目的教授或副教授,這里我想強(qiáng)調(diào)一下,最好是要找副教授以上職稱的人,因?yàn)樯婕暗綄W(xué)術(shù)領(lǐng)域,老美還是會(huì)對(duì)教授級(jí)人物比較看重,雖然可能不是每個(gè)學(xué)校都這樣,但是如果想申請(qǐng)牛校的話,這個(gè)是肯定的。因?yàn)榧词故窃趪?guó)內(nèi),副教授以下的人的話語(yǔ)權(quán)不多,份量也很輕,由此可見一斑。

      對(duì)于這2封推薦信,最好能找到和自己比較熟悉的老師,并且強(qiáng)烈建議其中一人帶過(guò)你做項(xiàng)目,這樣的話,不僅能突出自己有一些項(xiàng)目經(jīng)驗(yàn)的背景,而且讓這樣的老師寫推薦信的話,可以說(shuō)的內(nèi)容會(huì)比較多,比如在項(xiàng)目中遇到了什么復(fù)雜問題,解決了什么問題,是如何解決的,在項(xiàng)目中與他人的合作關(guān)系是怎么樣的。這樣寫的話可信度會(huì)很高,這樣也正是老美想知道,想了解的。另一封推薦信可以找上課的老師寫,找專業(yè)課的老師寫最好,并且你在這門課的成績(jī)應(yīng)該最好要比較高,比如90+,或者排名3+,這樣的話說(shuō)理就很自然了,也可以突出你在這方面的優(yōu)勢(shì),從而以小見大。3封推薦信中有1封推薦信是要涉及到申請(qǐng)者平時(shí)的學(xué)習(xí)生活的,這樣安排推薦信是為了更全面的展現(xiàn)出我們自己,學(xué)術(shù)方面有2封信的話,已經(jīng)足夠了。要是寫3封推薦信都是關(guān)于自己學(xué)術(shù)的,也沒有問題,但是不好,一是太單調(diào),二

      是可能展現(xiàn)出的東西會(huì)有重復(fù),浪費(fèi)了資源。所以我強(qiáng)烈建議3封中有1封是寫生活的,這一封推薦信的推薦人要求可以適當(dāng)放寬,不一定很看重職稱,網(wǎng)上也有很多人建議請(qǐng)自己的輔導(dǎo)員幫寫,不過(guò)我還是覺得還是找老師寫最好,輔導(dǎo)員不是我們的首選。在這封推薦信中我們可以寫寫平時(shí)參加的活動(dòng),自己在班級(jí)以及學(xué)校里的表現(xiàn),課外的交際能力也

      是老美蠻看重的一環(huán)。

      如何寫推薦信

      雖然現(xiàn)在很多學(xué)校都慢慢限制了筆推,而往往都采用網(wǎng)推的形式,不過(guò)其基本的準(zhǔn)備過(guò)程并沒有多大的變化。推薦信我認(rèn)為最重要的就是要在事實(shí)的基礎(chǔ)上突出自己某方面的特點(diǎn)。而且推薦信往往會(huì)由我們自己親自來(lái)寫初稿,然后老師改,自己親自幫寫推薦信的老師有,但是畢竟少。以下都是個(gè)人自己寫推薦信的一些經(jīng)驗(yàn),推薦信模板在taisha上有,但 是不全,所以我還是將我的整個(gè)推薦信的每段的思路寫下來(lái):

      第一大段,建議寫推薦信的老師自己介紹下自己,畢竟美國(guó)教授只認(rèn)識(shí)中國(guó)很少的教授,如果是同學(xué)自己寫,也一定最好調(diào)查下老師的職位什么的,開頭介紹下,對(duì)老美認(rèn)識(shí)推薦人還是有一定好處的。不用太擔(dān)心推薦信的模板問題。具體的開頭我的附件里有模板。第二大段,寫老師如何認(rèn)識(shí)自己的以及何時(shí)認(rèn)識(shí)的,這個(gè)還是挺重要的,從認(rèn)識(shí)的時(shí)間的長(zhǎng)短,基本可以看出這封推薦信的份量。然后寫老師對(duì)你的大致的評(píng)價(jià)(good,outstanding,etc.),再寫一點(diǎn)理由,理由這個(gè)就是具體問題具體分析了,也就是說(shuō)個(gè)小例子。

      第三大段,這一段是重點(diǎn)段落了,這一段的核心任務(wù)就是要寫出自己的亮點(diǎn)、特色,寫出自己的與眾不同,也是推薦信的最大難點(diǎn)。這一段的內(nèi)容是我們最應(yīng)該琢磨的了。每個(gè)人都是唯一的,所以我們的優(yōu)勢(shì),特長(zhǎng)就不會(huì)完全相同。申請(qǐng)美國(guó)一般來(lái)說(shuō)是3封推薦信,我們可以將自己的優(yōu)勢(shì)合理安排到各個(gè)推薦信當(dāng)中,達(dá)到相互補(bǔ)充的作用,相信大家也早

      就知道這點(diǎn)了。如果段落長(zhǎng)的話,可以分成2段。

      第四 第四大段--結(jié)尾,這個(gè)段落很模板,感覺,一般就是寫強(qiáng)烈推薦這個(gè)學(xué)生到某某項(xiàng)目,并歡迎隨時(shí)來(lái)郵件,寫上

      老師的電子郵件。

      下面是寫推薦信時(shí)的注意事項(xiàng): 1.如果是第一次寫推薦信,建議先參考模板,畢竟推薦信的格式本來(lái)就是會(huì)比較死板一些,除非有老師親自幫寫的,不過(guò)總體來(lái)說(shuō),大體格式一樣。等寫出一篇完整的推薦信來(lái)了之后,再進(jìn)行反復(fù)的修改,這時(shí)可以適當(dāng)調(diào)整推薦信各部分的內(nèi)容與邏輯關(guān)系。2.推薦信的內(nèi)容切忌不要寫得太浮夸,因?yàn)槔蠋煹脑u(píng)價(jià)越客觀,給人的可信度越高,不過(guò)適當(dāng)?shù)挠幸恍┵澝朗潜仨毜摹?.其實(shí)如果推薦信內(nèi)能讓老師寫出自己一個(gè)到兩個(gè)不足(不是很大的,不會(huì)嚴(yán)重影響到錄取的那種不足哈~~),其實(shí)是

      很有幫助的,現(xiàn)在有些網(wǎng)申系統(tǒng)中明確要求要推薦人指出同學(xué)的不足。就我自己來(lái)看,指出一些不足,反而會(huì)增加推薦

      信的份量,因?yàn)檫@樣可以讓老美更好的認(rèn)識(shí)你。4.如果是自己項(xiàng)目的導(dǎo)師寫的推薦信,一定要做足文章,他寫的推薦信份量應(yīng)該是最重的,因?yàn)樗肋^(guò)你做實(shí)際的項(xiàng)

      目,他對(duì)你的能力和知識(shí)水平有絕對(duì)的發(fā)言權(quán),感覺老美也會(huì)比較看重這方面。5.結(jié)尾最好有老師的電子郵件和電話。郵件一定要有,電話可以沒有,電話可以留辦公室的,這個(gè)可以看老師怎么說(shuō)。6.推薦信最好不要超過(guò)一頁(yè),以a4紙格式為準(zhǔn)。這樣既容易突出重點(diǎn),又使得老美可以耐心看。

      申請(qǐng)us的econ phd, 說(shuō)難確實(shí)很難。top 10 的program,除了寒冷的明尼蘇達(dá),每個(gè)學(xué)校都會(huì)收到約800封申請(qǐng),競(jìng)爭(zhēng)約20個(gè)席位。完美的gpa,gre,扎實(shí)的數(shù)學(xué)基礎(chǔ)和好的本科研究生學(xué)校會(huì)幫你在第一輪淘汰掉一部分對(duì)手,但你不會(huì)因此而被錄取。除非你有杰出的成就,比如發(fā)表過(guò)論文,贏過(guò)國(guó)家級(jí)獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金,剩下唯一能幫你的就是推薦信了。冷淡的推薦信是死亡之吻,而牛逼的推薦信則是免死金牌。

      我手上有免死金牌,一塊還是兩塊不知道,但是我在gre<320, econometrics b+的缺陷下躋進(jìn)我的dream school northwestern university, 一定是因?yàn)橥扑]信。

      我的本科學(xué)校u of iowa的經(jīng)濟(jì)系很小,教授因?yàn)楦鞣N原因紛紛離開。大三下我掐指一算,教過(guò)我的老師只有兩個(gè)可以要信,還少一封senior faculty的信。前途捉急的時(shí)候,scp的老師恰好來(lái)iowa 做宣講會(huì)。蹭吃蹭喝之余,聽說(shuō)他們要招助教,而教經(jīng)濟(jì)的教授wilfred ethier來(lái)自u(píng)penn,今年被諾獎(jiǎng)提名。我便知道,成全我夢(mèng)想的那縷東風(fēng)來(lái)了。

      當(dāng)時(shí)覺得ta 是個(gè)很神秘的工作。雖然我的目的明確—---為了推薦信,但是ta本身的經(jīng)歷也吸引著我,并且最終帶給我成長(zhǎng)。它要求我上課期間保持12分的專注,對(duì)知識(shí)點(diǎn)了如指掌。它讓我在不斷回答問題的過(guò)程中體會(huì)teaching的藝術(shù)性。我的‘學(xué)生們’只比我小個(gè)一兩歲,所以我要掌握好友好和威信的平衡:我記住70多人的名字,鼓勵(lì)他們,也互相開玩笑,但是考試作弊零分沒商量。暑校結(jié)束考評(píng)的時(shí)候,看到他們給我的可愛的打分和評(píng)語(yǔ),我覺得當(dāng)老師是一件非常幸福的,有成就感的工作。

      在和他游玩的過(guò)程中,我們有了許多有意義的對(duì)話。他看了我的fixed point paper,說(shuō)it’s very impressive for a junior to write an article like that.我還找機(jī)會(huì)給他看了我為housing research收集的資料。告訴他我在iowa找不到教授教我做研究,但是我真的很喜歡research,這些都是我空余時(shí)間做的。比爾回答,‘讀你的東西讓我想到自己年輕的時(shí)候,i was on my own when i was an undergrad as well.’ 我非常感動(dòng)。
