2.要研究如何寫(xiě)PS,我們就要首先了解為什么美國(guó)大學(xué)要求你提供PS。原因很簡(jiǎn)單,美

第一,PS應(yīng)該寫(xiě)什么樣的內(nèi)容?對(duì)于這個(gè)問(wèn)題,我的答案很簡(jiǎn)單:能給讀者留下良好閱讀體驗(yàn)的內(nèi)容。那什么樣的內(nèi)容能給讀者留下良好的閱讀體驗(yàn)?我想,可以由這么幾個(gè)標(biāo)準(zhǔn):1)新鮮。對(duì)于一個(gè)成天被大量?jī)?nèi)容雷同的PS折磨的美國(guó)大學(xué)招生官員而言,沒(méi)有什么比閱讀到一篇充滿(mǎn)新鮮信息的文章更有意思的了。對(duì)于西方人而言,大凡是和中國(guó)傳統(tǒng)相關(guān)的、中國(guó)風(fēng)土人情相關(guān)的、中國(guó)歷史相關(guān)的、中國(guó)文化相關(guān)的東西,都構(gòu)成對(duì)他們的新鮮感。當(dāng)然,如果他們閱讀了大量的相關(guān)文章,那么這個(gè)新鮮感會(huì)大打折扣。2)有思想和深度。閱讀的過(guò)程本質(zhì)上就是作者通過(guò)文字和讀者交流思想和情感的過(guò)程。一篇有思想有深度的文章能夠讓讀者對(duì)作者的思想和情緒產(chǎn)生共鳴,引發(fā)聯(lián)想,并進(jìn)而產(chǎn)生對(duì)作者的好感。3)輕松。為什么要強(qiáng)調(diào)輕松?是因?yàn)槲铱吹教嘀袊?guó)的學(xué)生喜歡寫(xiě)自己童年時(shí)的逆境,仿佛從小苦大仇深,熬到今天這步可謂歷盡坎坷。我覺(jué)得這樣的故事不是不可以寫(xiě),但如果寫(xiě)得太多太重,給人沉悶壓抑的感覺(jué)。還是要給他們準(zhǔn)備一些能夠讓他們放松下來(lái)閱讀并從中享受作者的情趣和思想的文章。4)人文。說(shuō)起人文兩個(gè)字,可能很多讀者會(huì)覺(jué)得比較高深。其實(shí)這是一個(gè)非常樸實(shí)的詞匯。凡是能觸及人類(lèi)本性和心靈層面的,我們都可以歸之為人文。例如親情、友誼、愛(ài)情、責(zé)任、榮譽(yù)、責(zé)任、同情等。原因也很簡(jiǎn)單:再?lài)?yán)密的邏輯推理,再高深的科技,只能Prove(證明),但人文的東西能夠Move(感動(dòng))我們。
第二,一旦在內(nèi)容這個(gè)大方向上確定后,我們?cè)倏紤]怎么寫(xiě)的問(wèn)題?;镜某霭l(fā)點(diǎn)還是一樣:要讓讀者以良好的閱讀體驗(yàn)?;诖?,我們首先想到就是語(yǔ)言問(wèn)題。優(yōu)秀的語(yǔ)言表現(xiàn),我認(rèn)為首先要強(qiáng)調(diào)的就是易讀。很多中國(guó)學(xué)生喜歡用一些生僻的GRE詞匯來(lái)顯示自己的詞匯水平,往往是適得其反。請(qǐng)稍體諒一下招生委員會(huì)的工作人員吧,他們一天要讀幾十篇文章。多用簡(jiǎn)單易懂的詞匯,多用短句,少用從句,少用長(zhǎng)句,少用倒裝結(jié)構(gòu),能幫助他們多塊好省地完成他們的本質(zhì)工作。當(dāng)然,我并不是說(shuō)寫(xiě)文章就是要平鋪直敘,索然無(wú)味,適當(dāng)?shù)漠?huà)龍點(diǎn)睛式的語(yǔ)句是必要的,關(guān)鍵是掌握好度。很多時(shí)候,生動(dòng)的,富有表現(xiàn)力的語(yǔ)言,往往是最簡(jiǎn)單的。
其次,我要強(qiáng)調(diào)的是寫(xiě)作的邏輯性、條理性和流暢性。
英語(yǔ)的寫(xiě)作中,邏輯性是非常重要的。邏輯不清,小至句子的語(yǔ)態(tài)和時(shí)態(tài)掌握不對(duì),大到句子承接、篇章結(jié)構(gòu)都會(huì)有問(wèn)題。而偏偏中國(guó)學(xué)生從小接受的邏輯教育不夠,說(shuō)話往往前言不搭后語(yǔ)。這樣的文章,肯定是要被篩掉的。條理性,我想不用多解釋。關(guān)于流暢性的問(wèn)題,需要多說(shuō)幾句。這里的流暢性,不僅僅指邏輯嚴(yán)密,條理清晰,簡(jiǎn)明易懂,還包含了節(jié)奏美感的意思。多看看美國(guó)的電影和紐約時(shí)報(bào),大家就知道我說(shuō)的是什么意思了。其實(shí)這個(gè)道理也很簡(jiǎn)單:邏輯嚴(yán)密,條理清晰的平鋪直敘,我們只能把它比作直板的線條,把它和婀娜的曲線相比,便高下立現(xiàn)。同樣的道理適用于我們賞讀ESSAY。
最后,我還要強(qiáng)調(diào)一個(gè)“畫(huà)面化”的原則。我們寫(xiě)PS的終極目的是讓讀者在閱讀過(guò)程中產(chǎn)生良好的閱讀體驗(yàn),并且盡可能長(zhǎng)地保留這種體驗(yàn)。畫(huà)面式、場(chǎng)景式的描寫(xiě)將有助于更加直觀地傳遞作者的情緒、思想和形象。例如,在為一個(gè)學(xué)生策劃PS時(shí),為了凸現(xiàn)其對(duì)從小對(duì)天文的濃厚興趣,我用了這么一段畫(huà)面式的開(kāi)篇:“Starry, starry night, paint your palette blue and grey…” When I was a little boy, many quiet summer nights, I’d lie on my back, looking into the sky dotted with stars and fascinated by the mystique of the remote universe.Starting from this pure yet strong curiosity was my journey of star-gazing and life-exploring.通過(guò)這段簡(jiǎn)單的描寫(xiě),一個(gè)對(duì)天文學(xué)充滿(mǎn)好奇心的孩子的形象就栩栩如生了。
4.以上談的都是原則性的問(wèn)題,具體到寫(xiě)作時(shí),會(huì)有哪些套路
這個(gè)問(wèn)題很多同學(xué)都很迷茫,這里我提供幾種常用的寫(xiě)作程式。最常用的套路是以某一主線,將不同階段的經(jīng)歷串聯(lián)起來(lái),展現(xiàn)出發(fā)展的軌跡,昭示將來(lái)的規(guī)劃,并展示作者的思想、價(jià)值觀或人生態(tài)度。這個(gè)主線,可以是某一個(gè)興趣,或者某個(gè)目標(biāo),或者某個(gè)對(duì)某個(gè)事務(wù)的理解或態(tài)度。例如,在上述案例中,主人公從小就對(duì)天文深感興趣,他在常年的天文觀測(cè)中,獲得了極大的樂(lè)趣,并進(jìn)而在社區(qū)成立了天文興趣小組,和同伴們分享科學(xué)探索的樂(lè)趣。2004年獅子座流星雨的成功觀測(cè),讓作者獲得極大滿(mǎn)足,而作者而由此更加堅(jiān)定了追隨多年的夢(mèng)想,去研究宇宙,體會(huì)純粹的樂(lè)趣。這一種寫(xiě)法,往往可以通過(guò)時(shí)間的轉(zhuǎn)換,來(lái)展現(xiàn)主線周?chē)亩鄠€(gè)層面。在上述案例中,就包含了作者對(duì)科學(xué)探索的興趣,對(duì)社區(qū)的貢獻(xiàn)、主動(dòng)創(chuàng)新以及領(lǐng)導(dǎo)精神等諸多方面。
第二種寫(xiě)法,一般是描述一個(gè)發(fā)生在近年的一個(gè)比較重大的經(jīng)歷,并由此引申出作者的目標(biāo)、愿望或者思考。這種寫(xiě)法和第一種的區(qū)別在于,不需要展現(xiàn)太明顯的時(shí)間跨度,而把著眼點(diǎn)放在某個(gè)時(shí)間點(diǎn)或者時(shí)間段上。這樣寫(xiě)的好處是可以把這個(gè)經(jīng)歷寫(xiě)得更加詳細(xì)生動(dòng)。
第三種寫(xiě)法,是比較少,也是難度比較大的一種寫(xiě)法,就是抒情或者議論為主的寫(xiě)法。作者往往對(duì)生活中的某個(gè)方面抒發(fā)感懷,或者對(duì)某個(gè)問(wèn)題發(fā)表見(jiàn)解。這種寫(xiě)法有些類(lèi)似散文或者雜文的寫(xiě)法,難度較大,對(duì)于駕馭語(yǔ)言的能力要求很高。我曾經(jīng)看到過(guò)有一些中國(guó)中學(xué)生試圖這么寫(xiě),但都寫(xiě)得不是很好。但如果寫(xiě)得好,并且有其他文章配合,應(yīng)該可以非常出彩。除非學(xué)生特別有思想,語(yǔ)言駕馭能力特別突出,并且確信目標(biāo)學(xué)校的招生官員足夠有品位,一般不建議采用這種寫(xiě)法。

3.不要拍馬屁,而寫(xiě)一些你以為招生官員聽(tīng)了會(huì)很高興的話-招生官員見(jiàn)多了文章寫(xiě)的盡是‘你們大學(xué)非常好,學(xué)術(shù)能力強(qiáng),設(shè)備好,有某某有名教授或校友,是我從小就想進(jìn)的唯一大學(xué)’等等的語(yǔ)言,還不如實(shí)際一點(diǎn)好好表現(xiàn)你自己的長(zhǎng)處,或是你如何在這樣競(jìng)爭(zhēng)的環(huán)境中生存。
4.不要像寫(xiě)簡(jiǎn)歷一樣的寫(xiě)作文 – 你的學(xué)術(shù)經(jīng)歷和活動(dòng)過(guò)程在申請(qǐng)表里面都詳細(xì)的填好了,盡量不要在作文里面重復(fù)已有的內(nèi)容,而是讓招生官員更清楚的看到你獨(dú)特的觀點(diǎn)。
5.有的學(xué)生為了要充滿(mǎn)要求的字?jǐn)?shù),想出很多不相關(guān)或是多余的詞句來(lái)填補(bǔ)空間。不管申請(qǐng)作文要求的是幾個(gè)字,你必須要把握的是要字字珠璣。
6.寫(xiě)完之后,自己一定要讀過(guò)來(lái)確定內(nèi)容是否通順,是否有表達(dá)清楚你自己的意思?拼寫(xiě)和文法是否正確?如果只是用電腦里面的拼寫(xiě)檢查通常是不夠的,因?yàn)橛械淖帜闫村e(cuò)以后如果是別的意思,WORD里面的拼寫(xiě)檢查沒(méi)法檢測(cè)出來(lái),也不會(huì)自動(dòng)幫你修改。
