I am delighted that the UN World Tourism Organization is celebrating this year's World Tourism Day under the theme “Tourism and Biodiversity”.Despite repeated global pledges to protect the planet's species and habitats – and the goods and services they provide – the variety of life on Earth continues to decline at an unprecedented rate.Human activities are the cause.This year – the International Year of Biodiversity– provides a timely opportunity to focus on the urgency of safeguarding biodiversity for the wealth, health and well-being of people in all regions of the world.我高興地看到，聯(lián)合國世界旅游組織在“旅游與生物多樣性”的主題下紀念今年的世界旅游日。盡管一再做出全球承諾，要保護地球上的物種和生境及其提供的貨物和服務(wù)，但生物種類繼續(xù)以史無前例的速度減少。其根源在于人類的活動。今年是國際生物多樣性年，提供了一個適時的機會來集中注意為世界各地人民的財富、健康和福祉保護生物多樣性的緊迫性。

Tourism and biodiversity are closely intertwined.Millions of people travel each year to experience nature's splendor.The income generated by sustainable tourism can provide important support for nature conservation, as well as for economic development.Furthermore, sustainable tourism can help to raise awareness among tourists and local communities of the importance of biodiversity to our everyday lives.旅游與生物多樣性密切相連。每年有千百萬人為領(lǐng)略壯麗的自然風(fēng)光而旅游?？沙掷m(xù)旅游業(yè)產(chǎn)生的收入可以為保護自然和發(fā)展經(jīng)濟提供重要的支持。此外，可持續(xù)旅游業(yè)還有助于游客和地方社區(qū)更多地認識到生物多樣性在日常生活中的重要作用。

Through initiatives such as its “Sustainable Tourism – Eliminating Poverty” project, and its

collaboration with the UN family, national tourism authorities and the private sector, the World Tourism Organization is helping to highlight the links between tourism, poverty alleviation and biodiversity.The tourism community is becoming increasingly aware of its responsibility.And indeed there is much the sector can contribute to protecting biodiversity, including by integrating simple measures such as managing tour groups to minimize disturbance to wildlife or buying supplies only from sustainable sources.世界旅游組織通過諸如“可持續(xù)旅游業(yè)——消除貧窮”項目這樣的舉措以及同聯(lián)合國系統(tǒng)、各國旅游主管部門和私人部門的合作，正在幫助突出宣傳旅游、扶貧和生物多樣性之間的聯(lián)系。旅游界正日益意識到自己的責任。這個行業(yè)確實可以為保護生物多樣性做出很大貢獻，包括為此實行一些簡單的措施，例如通過對旅游團的管理來盡量減少對野生物的干擾，或僅從可持續(xù)來源購買用品。

Today marks the first observance of World Statistics Day, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to recognize the importance of statistics in shaping our societies.我們在今天首次紀念世界統(tǒng)計日，聯(lián)合國大會宣布這個紀念日，是為了確認統(tǒng)計對社會的重要影響。

The United Nations Statistical Commission, established in 1947, has created international methodological standards and guidelines in virtually every area of statistics.It has played a key role in helping governments strengthen their statistical reporting, making data more available and comparable across countries and regions than ever before.1947年成立的聯(lián)合國統(tǒng)計委員會為幾乎每一個統(tǒng)計領(lǐng)域都制定了國際標準方法和準則。該委員會在幫助各國政府加強本國統(tǒng)計報告，并使數(shù)據(jù)比以往更易于獲得、在國家和區(qū)域之間具有更大可比性方面發(fā)揮著關(guān)鍵作用。

This year’s observance of World No Tobacco Day falls in the midst of preparations for September’s United Nations high-level meeting on non-communicable diseases.By controlling tobacco, we can go a long way towards addressing many of these chronicailments, including cancer and heart disease.今年世界無煙日活動適逢為九月份聯(lián)合國非傳染性疾病問題高級別會議開展籌備工作期間。通過控制煙草，我們可以在防治許多這些慢性病方面取得長足的進步，其中包括癌癥和心臟病。
