I am delighted that the UN World Tourism Organization is celebrating this year's World Tourism Day under the theme “Tourism and Biodiversity”.Despite repeated global pledges to protect the planet's species and habitats – and the goods and services they provide – the variety of life on Earth continues to decline at an unprecedented rate.Human activities are the cause. This year – the International Year of Biodiversity– provides a timely opportunity to focus on the urgency of safeguarding biodiversity for the wealth, health and well-being of people in all regions of the world.

Tourism and biodiversity are closely intertwined.Millions of people travel each year to experience nature's splendor. The income generated by sustainable tourism can provide important support for nature conservation, as well as for economic development.Furthermore, sustainable tourism can help to raise awareness among tourists and local communities of the importance of biodiversity to our everyday lives.

Through initiatives such as its “Sustainable Tourism – Eliminating Poverty” project, and its

collaboration with the UN family, national tourism authorities and the private sector, the World Tourism Organization is helping to highlight the links between tourism, poverty alleviation and biodiversity. The tourism community is becoming increasingly aware of its responsibility. And indeed there is much the sector can contribute to protecting biodiversity, including by integrating simple measures such as managing tour groups to minimize disturbance to wildlife or buying supplies only from sustainable sources.

On this World Tourism Day, I commend the tourism community for its growing recognitionof the importance of conserving the diversity of life on Earth, and I urge all partners to strengthen their commitment to sustainability.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Message on World Statistics DayOctober, 2010

Today marks the first observance of World Statistics Day, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to recognize the importance of statistics in shaping our societies.

Statistics permeate modern life. They are the basis for many governmental, business and community decisions. They provide information and insight about the trends and forces that affect our lives.Collected in surveys and censuses – three billion people will participate in population and housing censuses this year alone – statistics affect the planning of schools, hospitals, roads and much else.

Statistics are a vital tool for economic and social development, including our efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. For development to succeed, we need data collection and statistical analysis of poverty levels, access to education and the incidence of disease.Statistics are a central consideration in justifying almost every aspect of budgets and programmes that enable hungry children to be fed or that provide shelter and emergency health care for victims of natural disasters.

The United Nations Statistical Commission, established in 1947, has created international methodological standards and guidelines in virtually every area of statistics. It has played a key role in helping governments strengthen their statistical reporting, making data more available and comparable across countries and regions than ever before.1947年成立的聯(lián)合國統(tǒng)計委員會為幾乎每一個統(tǒng)計領(lǐng)域都制定了國際標準方法和準則。

I commend the dedication that many statistical experts bring to their reports and publications. They carry out an essential public service--one that promotes peace and democracy by giving citizens reliable and impartial public information about their communities.Their core values--service, integrity and professionalism--deserve full support in all nations.

However, as in so many other areas, developing countries often find themselves at a disadvantage, lacking funds to pay salaries, train staff and collect data.On this first World Statistics Day I encourage the international community to work with the United Nations to enable all countries to meet their statistical needs.Let us all acknowledge the crucial role of statistics in fulfilling our global mission of development and peace.

聯(lián)合國秘書長潘基文2011年世界無煙日致辭/UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Message on World No Tobacco Day

      May, 2011

This year’s observance of World No Tobacco Day falls in the midst of preparations for September’s United Nations high-level meeting on non-communicable diseases.By controlling tobacco, we can go a long way towards addressing many of these chronicailments, including cancer and heart disease.

The use of tobacco, which is highly addictive, killed approximately 100 million people in the twentieth century, and unless we act, it could kill up to a billion in this century.

The greatest tool in our arsenal is the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.Since it was opened for signature in 2003, more than 170 countries have become parties, making it one of the most rapidly embraced treaties in United Nations history.

From reducing demand through higher prices and taxes to restricting advertising and sponsorship, from warnings on packages to prohibitions against sales to minors, countries are using the Treaty’s provisions to protect their citizens. They are sending a clear message that tobacco use makes us poorer — in health and economic terms.

The Treaty’s comprehensive defence against industry tactics includes measures to reduce the illicit trade in tobacco products, address issues of liability, support economically viable alternative crops and protect public health policies from undue pressure.

The Framework Convention is clearly working to safeguard health in all countries that have adopted and enforced it.Yet, as the reports from States parties show, we have a long way to go.I urge all parties to fully meet their obligations under the Treaty, and I call on the few countries that have not yet become parties to do so.Together, we can halt the tobacco epidemic and the many problems it brings.

On this World No Tobacco Day, let us push for progress that will cut tobacco-related deaths and enliven the battle against other non-communicable diseases, helping to create a healthier world for all.
