The word ?mother? holds great power. It evokes memories of the women who gave us life, nurtured us as infants and helped mould us into who we are today. The Earth is the ultimate mother – an astounding planet that has, since time immemorial, supported life in myriad forms. As humans, we outgrow the need for constant maternal care. But we can never outgrow our reliance on Mother Earth. As long as we live, we need air, water, fertile soil and the countless other gifts this planet bestows.“母親”一詞蘊(yùn)含著巨大的力量。
This dependence makes it all the more astonishing that we have allowed rapid and often unwise human development to disrupt so many of the delicate systems that have functioned harmoniously for millennia. We are increasingly aware of the damage our species has wrought – the pollution, the dwindling resources, the species of flora and fauna forever gone, the rush towards tipping points that may alter the way our planet functions.Even with this knowledge, we have yet to change our ways.
But we can change, and 2015 brings a critical opportunity to do just that. This year, the world aims to finalize the post-2015 sustainable development agenda and reach a new and meaningful universal climate change agreement. These processes have the potential to redefine our future for the better, by eradicating extreme poverty in all its forms and resetting our relationship with this planet and every living being it sustains. But the big decisions that lie ahead are not just for world leaders and policy-makers.Today, on Mother Earth Day, I ask each one of us to be mindful of the impacts our choices have on this planet, and what those impacts will mean for future generations. Not everyone is able to make sustainable choices, but for those who can, simple decisions such as switching to energy-efficient lighting or buying only what you will consume – when accumulated across billions of people – can transform our world. The power to change begins with you.
As a global community, we have the opportunity to make 2015 a turning point in human history. This can be the year our children and grandchildren will remember as when we chose to build a sustainable and resilient future – both for Mother Earth and all those that development has until now left behind.Let us seize this historic opportunity together.
UN Secretary-General’s Message on International Widows’ Day June, 2011
This first International Widows’ Day is an occasion to call attention to the many “firsts” that women must face when their husbands die.In addition to coping with grief, they may find themselves for the first time since marriage without any social safety net.Far too often, widows lack access to inheritance, land tenure, employment and even the means to survive.
In places where a widow’s status is linked to her husband, she may find herself suddenly shunned and isolated.Marriage – whether she desires it or not – may be the only way for a widow to regain her footing in society.
Of the approximately 245 million widows in our world, more than 115 live in extreme poverty. In countries embroiled in conflicts, women are often widowed young and must bear the heavy burden of caring for their children amid fighting and displacement with no help or support.
Some of these widows are teenagers – or even younger. The death of their husbands can leave a terrible legacy these widows must endure throughout their remaining years.
All widows should be protected by the rights enshrined in the Convention on theElimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and other international human rights treaties.《消除對(duì)婦女一切形式歧視公約》和其他國(guó)際人權(quán)條約莊嚴(yán)載有各項(xiàng)權(quán)利,應(yīng)可保護(hù)所有寡婦。
But in reality, interpretations of customary codes, as well as traditional mourning and burial rites, often deny widows virtually all of their universally recognized rights.
Despite the many difficulties widows face, many make valuable contributions to their countries and communities. Some take on leadership roles at the highest levels.Others work in their families, taking in orphans, serving as caregivers and reaching across lines of conflict to mend tears in the social fabric.
We must recognize the important contribution of widows, and we must ensure that they enjoy the rights and social protections they deserve.
Death is inevitable, but we can reduce the suffering that widows endure by raising their status and helping them in their hour of need. This will contribute to promoting the full and equal participation of all women in society. And that will bring us closer to ending poverty and promoting peace around the world.

“Change Our World” is more than the theme of this year’s International Youth Day;it is an injunction that
should inspire young people at all times.“改變世界”不只是今年國(guó)際青年日的主題,而且是一條激勵(lì)各個(gè)時(shí)代青年人的訓(xùn)喻。
Far too many of the world’s more than one billion young people lack the education, freedom and
opportunities they deserve.Yet despite these constraints – and in some cases because of them – young people are mobilizing in growing numbers to build a better future.Over the past year, they have achieved stunning results, overturning dictatorships and sending waves of hope across regions and around the world.

Young people are gifted with open minds and a keen awareness of emerging trends, and are bringing their energy, ideas and courage to some of the most complex and important challenges facing the human family. They often understand better than older generations that we can transcend our religious and cultural differences in order to reach our shared goals. They are standing up for the rights of oppressed peoples, including those who suffer discrimination based on gender, race and sexual orientation. They are confronting sensitive issues in order to stop
the spread of HIV.And they are often the leading proponents of sustainability and green life-styles. The international community must continue to work together to expand the horizons of opportunity for these young women and men and answer their legitimate demands for dignity, development and decent work.Failing to invest in our youth is a false economy.Investments in young people will pay great dividends in a better future for
all.

This Day marks the end of the International Year of Youth, a milestone in global advocacy by and for the world’s young people. My hope is that this experience will now provide a foundation to go even further in harnessing the talents and energies of young people. To them I say: you have the opportunity to change our world.Seize it.

UN Secretary-General's Message on the International Day of Non-Violence New York, 2 October 2010
The International Day of Non-Violence marks the birth date of one of the doctrine's leading voices, Mahatma Gandhi.“Non-violence”, Gandhi said, “is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind.”
We at the United Nations strive to harness the power of non-violence to overcome prejudice, end conflict, and cultivate mutual respect and understanding among peoples and countries.Indeed, the creed of non-violence echoes through the United Nations Charter: “To practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours”;“to ensure...that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest.”
We work every day to bring these lofty principles to life.We do this by promoting human rights, seeking to resolve conflicts through peaceful means, campaigning to eliminate violence against women, working to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, and building bridges across cultures and countering hatred and extremism everywhere.
This work cannot be left to governments or international organizations alone.Peace may be achieved around the negotiating table, but it is sustained around community tables.Peace starts with people--it flows from the hearts of committed women and men.Communities, families, and individuals all have a critical role to play in defeating violence and creating a culture of peace.
On this International Day of Non-Violence, let us work together to use the great force of non-violence to build peaceful and just societies for ourselves and for our children.

Secretary-General's Message on International Mother Earth Day
Each year, on Mother Earth Day, we reflect on our relationship with the planet that supports us.The air we breathe, the water we drink and the soil that grows our food are part of a delicate global ecosystem that is increasingly under pressure from human activities. From tropical deforestation to depleted ocean fisheries, from growing freshwater shortages to the rapid decline of biodiversity and increasingly polluted skies and seas in many parts of the world, we see the heavy hand of humankind.
As our population grows we have to recognize that our consumption of the planet’s resources is unsustainable. We need a global transformation of attitude and practice. It is especially urgent to address how we generate the energy that drives our progress.Burning fossil fuels is the principal cause of climate change, which increasingly threatens prosperity and stability in all regions. That is why world leaders have pledged to reach a global legal climate agreement in 2015.
Action on climate change presents multiple opportunities to reset our relationship with Mother Earth and improve human well-being, especially for the poorest and most vulnerable.Sustainable energy for all can increase health, wealth and opportunity for billions of people, as can climate-smart agriculture, more efficient cities and better managed and protected forests.
To generate ambitious action on the ground and raise momentum for a new climate treaty in 2015, I am convening a Climate Summit in New York on 23 September this year.I am inviting Heads of State and Government along with private sector and civil society leaders to showcase initiatives and forge alliances that can help launch a sustainable future. But they need support and encouragement, for change is never easy.So today, on International Mother Earth Day, I appeal to all people everywhere to raise their voices.Speak out on behalf of this planet, our only home.Let us care for Mother Earth so she can continue to care for us as she has done for millennia.
