November 1997

(Excerpt 1)
Mr.President,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I wish to thank President Rudenstine for inviting me to this old yet modern institution of the United States in this golden fall. Since its founding some 360 years ago, Harvard has nurtured a great number of outstanding statesmen, scientists, writers and businessmen, including six of the American Presidents and over thirty Nobel Prize winners. The fact that Harvard was founded before the United States of America testifies to its position in the American history. Harvard is among the first American universities to accept Chinese students. The Chinese educational, scientific and cultural communities have all along maintained academic exchanges with this university.Harvard has thus made useful contribution to the enhanced mutual understanding between the Chinese and American peoples. 哈佛為增進(jìn)中美兩國人民的相互了解作出了有益的貢獻(xiàn).Mutual understanding is the basis for state-to-state relations.Without it, it would be impossible for countries to build trust and promote cooperation with one another.Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the United States, the exchanges and mutual understanding between our two peoples have broadened and deepened steadily. However, this is not enough. To promote the development of China-U.S.relations, China needs to know the United States better and vice versa. In the prolonged course of its development, China has formed its fine historical and cultural traditions, which have been either developed or sublated with the changes of the times and social progress. These traditions have exerted a profound impact on the values and way of life of the Chinese people today, and on China’s road of advance. Here, I would like to make some observations on the following aspects, which I hope will help you know China better. First, the tradition of solidarity and unity. The Chinese nation is a big family composed of 56 nationalities.Since time immemorial, people of all our nationalities have established close-knit political, economic and cultural links and joined hands in developing the vast land of our country.China became a vast unified country more than 2,000 years ago.The age-old Chinese culture becomes a strong bond for ethnic harmony and national unity.Solidarity and unity are deeply inscribed in the hearts of the Chinese people as part of their national identity.Despite occasional divisions, ethnic harmony and national unity have remained the main stream in the history of the Chinese nation, and an important guarantee for China’s development and progress. The founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 marked an unprecedented great unity of the Chinese nation.A new type of relationship of equality, solidarity and mutual assistance among all our nationalities has been established.People of all our nationalities enjoy full rights and freedoms provided for by the law.In places where there is a high concentration of ethnic minorities, regional autonomy is in practice. These regions have witnessed continued economic and social development. All these have laid a solid political foundation for consolidated national unity. 所有這些,為鞏固國家統(tǒng)一奠定了堅(jiān)實(shí)的政治基礎(chǔ).Second, the tradition of maintaining independence. Our ancestors always regarded the spirit of maintaining independence as the foundation of a nation. As one of the cradles of human civilization, China has all along maintained its cultural tradition without letup in its history of several thousand years. In modern times, the frequent bullying and humiliation by imperialist powers once weakened China. However, after a hundred years’ struggle of the entire Chinese nation, China has stood up again as a giant. This fully testifies to the indestructible strength of this independent national spirit of the Chinese people.Today, in finding a road of advance suited to us, we will proceed from our own national conditions to address the problems of how to attain economic, political and cultural development without blindly copying other countries’ models. In handing international affairs, we decide our positions and policies from an independent approach. The Chinese people cherish its friendship and cooperation with other peoples, and they also cherish their right to independence, which they have won through protracted struggles. Third, the peace-loving tradition.Chinese thinkers of the pre-Qin days(over 2000 years ago)advanced the doctrine “l(fā)oving people and treating neighbors kindly are most valuable to a country”.This is a reflection of the aspiration of the Chinese people for a peaceful world where people of all countries live in harmony.Today, the Chinese people who are committed to modernization need more than ever a long-term international environment of peace and a favorable neighboring environment.China’s foreign policy is peace-oriented.We will establish and develop friendly relations and cooperation with all countries in the world on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, especially the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs. We still never impose upon others the kind of sufferings we ourselves once experienced.A developing and progressing China does not pose a threat to anyone.China will never seek hegemony even if it grows rich and strong in the future.China is always a staunch force for world peace and regional stability. Fourth, the tradition of constantly striving to strengthen oneself.Through observing the changing nature of the universe and of all things, ancient Chinese philosophers proposed the following doctrine: “Heaven operates vigorously, and gentlemen exert to strengthen themselves unceasingly.” This idea has become an important moral force spurring the Chinese people to work hard for change and innovation. The fruits of China’s ancient civilization were brought about by the tireless efforts and hard work of the Chinese nation. In the past one hundred years or so, the Chinese people waged arduous struggles to lift themselves from their historical plight under semi-colonial and semi-feudal rule.Dr.Sun Yat-sen, China’s forerunner in the democratic revolution, was the first to put forward the slogan of “rejuvenation of China”.He led the Revolution of 1911 to overthrow the autocratic monarchy lasting several millennia in China.Under the guidance of Mao Zedong Thought, the Communist Party of China led the Chinese people in achieving China’s national independence and people’s liberation and in building China into a socialist country with initial prosperity.Today, guided by Deng Xiaoping Theory, the Chinese people are firmly pressing ahead with reform and opening-up and have achieved remarkable successes in the modernization drive.China has entered a period of its fastest and healthiest growth in this century.
(Excerpt 2)
The reform and opening-up endeavour is an embodiment and a creative development of the Chinese spirit of constantly striving to strengthen oneself and change and innovation in modern times. We refer to our reform and opening-up as socialist reform and opening up because it is a self-improvement and development of the socialist system in China.Practice in the last twenty years has eloquently proved that we are going in the right direction, firm in conviction, steady in our steps and gradual in our approach when carrying out the reform and opening-up and that we have achieved tremendous succeeded. We have successfully overcome various difficulties and risks in the course of our advance without causing great social unrest.Rather, we have succeeded in greatly releasing and developing social productive forces and maintained social stability and an all-round round progress. We are conducting a comprehensive reform with full confidence.Economically, we will speed up the establishment of a socialist market economy and realize industrialization, and the socialization, marketization and modernization of the economy.Politically, we will endeavor to develop socialist democracy, govern the country according to law, build a socialist country under the rule of law and ensure the full exercise of peoples’ rights to govern the country and manage social affairs.Culturally, we will work hard to develop a socialist culture that is national, scientific and popular, a culture that is oriented to modernization, to the world and to the future, adopt a strategy of rejuvenating China through science and education, and strive to raise the political and moral standards as well as scientific and cultural level of the entire nation. In a word, it is to build China into a prosperous, strong, democratic, and culturally advanced modern country. A county with a vast territory, a big population and a long history, China should make greater contribution to humanity. The Chinese people waged a dauntless struggle for one hundred years. They have effected great reforms and changes one after another to build China into a strong and prosperous country. They have worked to strengthen ethnic solidarity and achieve national reunification and to promote the lofty cause of world peace and development. In the final analysis, they have done all these for just one objective, that is, the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and China’s new and greater contribution to humanity.

I'm Harvard's Most Successful Dropout
Thank you.President Bok, former President Rudenstine, incoming President Faust,謝謝.博克校長、魯?shù)撬固骨靶iL、即將就任的福斯特校長、members of the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers, members of the faculty, parents, and especially, the graduates.
I've been waiting more than 30 years to say this: “Dad, I always told you I'd come back and get my degree.”
I want to thank Harvard for this honor.我要感謝哈佛給了我這個(gè)榮譽(yù).I'll be changing my job next year, and it will be nice to finally have a college degree on my resume. I applaud the graduates for taking a much more direct route to your degrees. For my part, I'm just happy that the Crimson called me “Harvard's most successful dropout.”
I guess that makes me valedictorian of my own special class.I did the best of everyone who failed. But taking a serious look back, I do have one big regret. I left Harvard with no real awareness of the awful inequities in the world-
當(dāng)我離開哈佛時(shí),我并沒真正有意識(shí)到這個(gè)世界存在著可怕的不平等現(xiàn)象.the appalling disparities of health, and wealth, and opportunity that condemn millions of people to lives of despair. I learned a lot here at Harvard about new ideas in economics and politics. I got great exposure to the advances being made in the sciences. But humanity's greatest advances are not in its discoveries-but in how those discoveries are applied to reduce inequity. Whether through democracy, strong public education, quality health care, or broad economic opportunity,不管通過何種方式--民主、強(qiáng)大的公共教育、優(yōu)質(zhì)的醫(yī)療保健,或者廣泛的經(jīng)濟(jì)機(jī)會(huì)--
reducing inequity is the highest human achievement. I left campus knowing little about the millions of young people
cheated out of educational opportunities here in this country.當(dāng)我離開校園時(shí),并不知道美國有數(shù)百萬的青少年享受不到受教育的機(jī)會(huì),And I knew nothing about the millions of people living in unspeakable poverty and disease in developing countries. It took me decades to find out. You graduates came to Harvard at a different time. You know more about the world's inequities than the classes that came before. In your years here, I hope you've had a chance to think about how, in this age of accelerating technology,我希望你們過去幾年都曾經(jīng)認(rèn)真想過,在科技飛速發(fā)展的時(shí)代,we can finally take on these inequities, and we can solve them. Now, this task is open-ended.It can never be finished. But a conscious effort to answer this challenge can change the world. Yes, inequity has been with us forever, but the new tools we have to cut through complexity have not been with us forever. They are new. They can help us make the most of our caring-and that's
why the future can be different from the past. The defining and ongoing innovations of this age-biotechnology, the personal computer, and the Internet-
give us a chance we've never had before to end extreme poverty and end death from preventable disease. In line with the promise of this age, I want to exhort each of the graduates here to take on an issue,秉承這個(gè)時(shí)代帶給人類的希望,我想敦促在座的每一位畢業(yè)生,接受一個(gè)問題的挑戰(zhàn),a complex problem-a deep inequity, and become a specialist on it.Don't let complexity stop you. Be activists.Take on big inequities.I feel sure it will be one of the great experiences of your lives. You graduates are coming of age in an amazing time. As you leave Harvard, you have technology that members of my class never had. You have awareness of global inequity, which we did not have. And with that awareness, you likely also have an informed conscience
有了這種意識(shí),你很可能就會(huì)有明事理的良心.that will torment you if you abandon these people whose lives you could change with modest effort.如果無需花多大的努力你就可以改變某些人的生活,但你卻對(duì)他們置之不理,那你會(huì)受到良心的譴責(zé).You have more than we had;you must start sooner, and carry on longer. And I hope you will come back here to Harvard 30 years from now
我希望你們在30年后再回到哈佛,and reflect on what you've done with your talent and your energy. I hope you will judge yourselves not on your professional
accomplishments alone,我希望你們不僅僅是以自己職業(yè)上的成就來評(píng)價(jià)自己,but also on how well you have addressed the world's deepest inequities,還要以你們?nèi)绾翁幚硎澜缟献钌钪氐牟黄降痊F(xiàn)象,on how well you treated people a world away who have nothing in common with you but their humanity. Good luck.
The Spider’s Bite
When I was in middle school, a poisonous spider bit my right hand.I ran to my mom for help—but instead of taking me to a doctor, my mom set my hand on fire. After wrapping my hand with several layers of cotton, then soaking it in wine, she put a chopstick into my mouth, and ignited the cotton.Heat quickly penetrated the cotton and began to roast my hand. The searing pain made me want to scream, but the chopstick prevented it.All I could do was watch my hand burn-one minute, then two minutes –until mom put out the fire. You see, the part of China I grew up in was a rural village, and at that time pre-industrial.When I was born, my village had no cars, no telephones, no electricity, not even running water. And we certainly didn’t have access to modern medical resources. There was no doctor my mother could bring me to see about my spider bite. For those who study biology, you may have grasped the science behind my mom’s cure: heat deactivatesproteins, and a spider’s venom is simply a form of protein. It’s cool how that folk remedy actually incorporates basic biochemistry, isn’t it? But I am a PhD student in biochemistry at Harvard, I now know that better, less painful and less risky treatments existed. So I can’t help but ask myself, why I didn’t receive one at the time?
Fifteen years have passed since that incident.I am happy to report that my hand is fine. But this question lingers, and I continue to be troubled by the unequal distribution of scientific knowledge throughout the world. We have learned to edit the human genome and unlock many secrets of how cancer progresses. We can manipulate neuronal activity literally with the switch of a light. Each year brings more advances in biomedical research-exciting, transformative accomplishments.Yet, despite the knowledge we have amassed, we haven’t been so successful in deploying it to where it’s needed most.According to the World Bank, twelve percent of the world’s population lives on less than $2 a day.Malnutrition kills more than 3 million children annually.Three hundred million people are afflicted by malaria globally. All over the world, we constantly see these problems of poverty, illness, and lack of resources impeding the flow of scientific information.Lifesaving knowledge we take for granted in the modern world is often unavailable in these underdeveloped regions. And in far too many places, people are still essentially trying to cure a spider bite with fire. While studying at Harvard, I saw how scientific knowledge can help others in simple, yet profound ways. The bird flu pandemic in the 2000s looked to my village like a spell cast by demons. Our folk medicine didn’t even have half-measures to offer. What’s more, farmers didn’t know the difference between common cold and flu;they didn’t understand that the flu was much more lethal than the common cold. Most people were also unaware that the virus could transmit across different animal species. So when I realized that simple hygiene practices like separating different animal species could contain the spread of the disease, and that I could help make this knowledge available to my village, that was my first “Aha” moment as a budding scientist. But it was more than that: it was also a vital inflection point in my own ethical development, my own self-understanding as a member of the global community.Harvard dares us to dream big, to aspire to change the world. Here on this Commencement Day, we are probably thinking of grand destinations and big adventures that await us.As for me, I am also thinking of the farmers in my village. My experience here reminds me how important it is for researchers to communicate our knowledge to those who need it.Because by using the science we already have, we could probably bring my village and thousands like it into the world you and I take for granted every day.And that’s an impact every one of us can make!
But the question is, will we make the effort or not?
More than ever before, our society emphasizes science and innovation. But an equally important emphasis should be on distributing the knowledge we have to those whoneeded.Changing the world doesn’t mean that everyone has to find the next big thing. It can be as simple as becoming better communicators, and finding more creative ways to pass on the knowledge we have to people like my mom and the farmers in their local community. Our society also needs to recognize that the equal distribution of knowledge is a pivotal step of human development, and work to bring this into reality. And if we do that, then perhaps a teenager in rural China who is bitten by a spider will not have to burn his hand, but will know to seek a doctor instead.[I have just been to Buckingham Palace where Her Majesty the Queen has asked me to form a new government, and I accepted.[我剛?cè)ミ^白金漢宮,女王陛下要我組建新政府,我接受了。]
In David Cameron, I follow in the footsteps of a great, modern prime minister.Under David's leadership, the government stabilized the economy, reduced the budget deficit, and helped more people into work than ever before.[我沿戴維·卡梅倫的足跡前行,他是一位偉大、現(xiàn)代的首相。
But David's true legacy is not about the economy, but about social justice. From the introduction of same-sex marriage, to taking people on low wages out of income tax altogether.[但戴維真正的遺產(chǎn)并非搞經(jīng)濟(jì),而是社會(huì)公正。
David Cameron has led a one nation government and it is in that spirit that I also plan to lead.Because not everybody knows this, but the full title of my party is the Conservative and Unionist Party. And that word Unionist is very important to me.It means we believe in the Union. That precious, precious bond betweenEngland, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.[卡梅倫領(lǐng)導(dǎo)了一國政府,我將本著這種精神執(zhí)政。
But it means something else that is just as important. It means that we believe in a Union not just of the nations of the United Kingdom, but between all of our citizens.Every one of us, whoever we are and wherever we are from.[可它還意味著同樣重要的東西,它意味著我們不僅相信聯(lián)合王國的統(tǒng)一,還相信所有公民的統(tǒng)一,每個(gè)人,不論我們是誰,我們從哪里來。]
That means fighting against the burning injustice that if you are born poor, you will die on average nine years earlier than others. If you're black, you're treated more harshly by the criminal justice system than if you are white.[那意味著要反對(duì)迫切的不公正。
If you're a white, working-class boy, you're less likely than anyone else in Britain to go to university. If you're at a state school, you're less likely to reach the top professions than if you were educated privately.[如果你是白人工人階級(jí)的男孩,在英國上大學(xué)的機(jī)會(huì)最低。
If you are a woman, you will earn less than a man.If you suffer from mental health problems, there's not enough help to hand.If you're young, you'll find it harder than ever before to own your own home.[如果你是一個(gè)婦女,你賺的比男人少。
But the mission to make Britain a country that works for everyone means more than just fighting these injustices.[可讓英國成為為所有人服務(wù)這一使命不僅意味著應(yīng)對(duì)這些不公。]
If you're from an ordinary working-class family, life is much harder than many people in Westminster realize. You have the job, but you don't always have the job security.[如果你來自普通工人階級(jí)家庭,生活比政府里許多人知道的更艱難。 You have your own home, but you worry about paying the mortgage. You can just about manage, but you worry about the cost of living and getting your kids into a good school.[你有房子,可擔(dān)心付不起月供。
If you're one of those families. If you're just managing.I want to address you directly.I know you're working around the clock, I know you're doing your best, and I know that sometimes, life can be a struggle. The government I lead will be driven not by the interests of a privileged few, but by yours.[如果你來自這些家庭,如果你也湊合活著,我想要直接和你說:我知道你起早貪黑,我知道你竭盡全力,我知道生活有時(shí)是一種掙扎。
We will do everything we can to give you more control over your lives. When we take the big calls, we'll think not of the powerful but you. When we pass new laws, we'll listen not to the mighty, but you. When it comes to taxes we'll prioritize not the wealthy, but you. When it comes to opportunity, we won't entrench the advantages of the fortunate few.[我們將盡一切所能讓你更好掌控自己的生活。
We will do everything we can to help anybody, whatever your background, to go as far as your talents will take you.[我們將盡一切所能幫助所有人,不論你背景如何,都讓你能發(fā)揮所長。]
We are living through an important moment in our country's history.Following the referendum we face a time of great national change. And I know because we're Great Britain, we will rise to the challenge.[我們經(jīng)歷著國家歷史上一個(gè)重要時(shí)刻。
As we leave the European Union, we will forge a bold, new positive role for ourselves in the world. And we will make Britain a country that works not for a privileged few, but for every one of us.[我們離開了歐盟,我們會(huì)在世界上打造一個(gè)勇敢、積極的新角色。 That will be the mission of the government I lead, and together, we will build a better Britain.[這是我領(lǐng)導(dǎo)政府的使命,我們一起努力,就會(huì)建成一個(gè)更美好的英國。]

Of all the characters that I'' ve “ met” through books and movies, two stand out as people that I most want to emulate. They are Attacus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird and Dr.Archibald “ Moonlight” Graham from Field of Dreams. They appeal to me because they embody what I strive to be.They are influential people in small towns who have a direct positive effect on those around them.I,too, plan to live in a small town after graduating from college, and that positive effect is something I must give in order to be satisfied with my life. Both Mr.Finch and Dr.Graham are strong supporting characters in wonderful stories. They symbolize good, honesty, and wisdom. When the story of my town is written I want to symbolize those things. The base has been formed for me to live a productive, helpful life.As an

Eagle Scout I represent those things that Mr.Finch and Dr.Graham represent. In the child/adolescent world I am Mr.Finch and Dr.Graham, but soon I'' ll be entering the adult world,a world in which I'' m not yet prepared to lead.I'' m quite sure that as teenagers Attacus Finch and Moonlight Graham often wondered what they could do to help others. They probably emulated someone who they had seen live a successful life. They saw someone like my grandfather,40-year president of our hometown bank, enjoy a lifetime of leading, sharing, and giving.I have seen him spend his Christmas Eves taking gifts of food and joy to indigent families.Often when his bank could not justify a loan to someone in need,my grandfather made the loan from his own pocket. He is a real-life Moonlight Graham,a man who has shown me that characters like Dr.Graham and Mr.Finch do much much more than elicit tears and smiles from readers and movie watchers.Through him and others in my family I feel I have acquired the values and the burning desire to benefit others that will form the foundation for a great life.I also feel that that foundation is not enough.I do not yet have the sophistication, knowledge, and wisdom necessary to succeed as I want to in the adult world.I feel that Harvard, above all others, can guide me

This essay is a great example of how to answer this question well. This applicant chose characters who demonstrated specific traits that reflect on his own personality. We believe that he is sincere about his choices because his reasons are personal(being from a small town, and so forth). He managed to tell us a good deal about himself, his values, and his goals while maintaining a strong focus throughout.
