“Once upon a time，there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose.To all the suitors who came to the king's palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each next to impossible.One day, into the king's palace came a handsome young prince...“ Well, you know the rest.The three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess's hand triumphantly.And the ending is always the same, finishing with the line ”And they live happily every after.“

Why aren't we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, I would say, so unimaginative? How can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? Because, I think, it is a typical success story.It is highly philosophical and symbolic.By implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1)a goal to be set.as represented by the beautiful princess;2)challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks;3)the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through;and 4)the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.The story not only caters to everyone's inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result.The reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa.If a person inherits his father's millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence.The term ”success", to be sure.will not sit still for easy definition.But as I understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor.To clarify my view, let me give another analogy.If we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away David Seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another David, namely David Beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings.If we further changed the rules by not allowing Arsenal's defenders to defend, so that Beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared.In accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value.The sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.The concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative.Something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person.In acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success.That's why we greatly admire Stephen Hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.I myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this.I could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level contest.But I chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties.Now here I am.If I come out first, it will be a great success for me.If I come out last-I hope this will not be the case-but if I come out last, I will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties.For me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because I have truly gained by participating.Let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success.You my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties.The ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.Thank you.譯文:成功之我見(jiàn)

The International Day of Non-Violence marks the birth date of one of the doctrine's leading voices, Mahatma Gandhi.“Non-violence”, Gandhi said, “is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind.”

國(guó)際非暴力日正是堅(jiān)守此項(xiàng)信念的主要代言人之一圣雄甘地的誕辰日。甘地說(shuō)，“非暴力”“是人類(lèi)最偉大的武器”。

We at the United Nations strive to harness the power of non-violence to overcome prejudice, end conflict, and cultivate mutual respect and understanding among peoples and countries.Indeed, the creed of non-violence echoes through the United Nations Charter: “To practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours”;“to ensure...that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest.”

我們立足聯(lián)合國(guó)，努力利用非暴力這一武器，克服偏見(jiàn)、結(jié)束沖突、增進(jìn)人與人、國(guó)與國(guó)之間的相互尊重和了解。非暴力信條通過(guò)《聯(lián)合國(guó)憲章》得到真實(shí)反映：“力行容恕，彼此以善鄰之道，和睦相處”；“確保??非為公共利益，不得使用武力”。

We work every day to bring these lofty principles to life.We do this by promoting human rights, seeking to resolve conflicts through peaceful means, campaigning to eliminate violence against women, working to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, and building bridges across cultures and countering hatred and extremism everywhere.我們每天都致力于將這些崇高原則落實(shí)在現(xiàn)實(shí)生活中。我們?yōu)榇舜龠M(jìn)人權(quán)、尋求以和平手段解決沖突、發(fā)起消除對(duì)婦女的暴力行為的運(yùn)動(dòng)、努力實(shí)現(xiàn)千年發(fā)展目標(biāo)、建造跨越文化的橋梁，以及反對(duì)任何地方出現(xiàn)的仇恨和極端主義。

This work cannot be left to governments or international organizations alone.Peace may be achieved around the negotiating table, but it is sustained around community tables.Peace starts with people--it flows from the hearts of committed women and men.Communities, families, and individuals all have a critical role to play in defeating violence and creating a culture of peace.這項(xiàng)工作不能光靠政府和國(guó)際組織來(lái)承擔(dān)。和平或許可在談判桌上實(shí)現(xiàn)，但是，和平只有放到社區(qū)的桌面上才能夠維持。和平始于人們的心中，它發(fā)自致力于和平的男女的內(nèi)心。無(wú)論是社區(qū)、家庭還是個(gè)人，在戰(zhàn)勝暴力和創(chuàng)建和平文化方面都可扮演舉足輕重的角色。

2011年6月23日是國(guó)際寡婦日，今年是第一次開(kāi)展國(guó)際寡婦日活動(dòng)，聯(lián)合國(guó)秘書(shū)長(zhǎng)潘基文發(fā)表2011年國(guó)際寡婦日致辭．

This first International Widows’ Day is an occasion to call attention to the many “firsts” that women must face when their husbands die.In addition to coping with grief, they may find themselves for the first time since marriage without any social safety net.Far too often, widows lack access to inheritance, land tenure, employment and even the means to survive.今年是第一次開(kāi)展國(guó)際寡婦日活動(dòng)，在這個(gè)日子里，我們呼吁人們關(guān)注婦女在丈夫死亡后必須“第一次”面對(duì)的許多問(wèn)題。婦女不僅陷入悲痛，而且還可能在結(jié)婚后第一次發(fā)現(xiàn)她們沒(méi)有任何社會(huì)安全網(wǎng)。寡婦往往不能繼承財(cái)產(chǎn)，沒(méi)有土地保有權(quán)，不能就業(yè)，甚至沒(méi)有生存的手段。

In places where a widow’s status is linked to her husband, she may find herself suddenly shunned and isolated.Marriage – whether she desires it or not – may be the only way for a widow to regain her footing in society.在寡婦的地位與丈夫緊密相聯(lián)的地方，寡婦可能發(fā)現(xiàn)人們突然躲避她，她陷入孤立無(wú)援的境地。無(wú)論寡婦是否愿意，結(jié)婚可能是她在社會(huì)重新立腳的唯一途徑。

Of the approximately 245 million widows in our world, more than 115 live in extreme poverty.In countries embroiled in conflicts, women are often widowed young and must bear the heavy burden of caring for their children amid fighting and displacement with no help or support.全世界約有2.45億寡婦，其中超過(guò)1.15億人生活極端貧困。在沖突不斷的國(guó)家，婦女往往年輕就守寡，不得不在戰(zhàn)火中和顛沛流離的生活中肩負(fù)起照顧子女的重?fù)?dān)，她們得不到任何幫助或支持。

Some of these widows are teenagers – or even younger.The death of their husbands can leave a terrible legacy these widows must endure throughout their remaining years.一些寡婦仍然是少女，有的甚至更年輕。丈夫死亡后，給寡婦們留下的可能是終身噩夢(mèng)。

All widows should be protected by the rights enshrined in the Convention on theElimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and other international human rights treaties.《消除對(duì)婦女一切形式歧視公約》和其他國(guó)際人權(quán)條約莊嚴(yán)載有各項(xiàng)權(quán)利，應(yīng)可保護(hù)所有寡婦。

But in reality, interpretations of customary codes, as well as traditional mourning and burial rites, often deny widows virtually all of their universally recognized rights.但在現(xiàn)實(shí)中，對(duì)習(xí)慣法規(guī)的各種解讀以及傳統(tǒng)的喪葬禮儀往往剝奪了寡婦幾乎所有的普遍公認(rèn)權(quán)利。

Despite the many difficulties widows face, many make valuable contributions to their countries and communities.Some take on leadership roles at the highest levels.Others work in their families, taking in orphans, serving as caregivers and reaching across lines of conflict to mend tears in the social fabric.雖然寡婦面臨許多困難，但許多人依然對(duì)國(guó)家和社區(qū)作出了寶貴貢獻(xiàn)。一些人在最高級(jí)別發(fā)揮領(lǐng)導(dǎo)作用。其他人則在家里工作，收養(yǎng)孤兒，照顧他人，跨越?jīng)_突線(xiàn)，修補(bǔ)社會(huì)組織出現(xiàn)的裂痕。
